(AP) —An electronic monitoring system tracking sex offenders, parolees and others shut down on Tuesday, leaving authorities in 49 states blind to offenders’ movements for about 12 hours, authorities said Wednesday. A system operated by Boulder, Colo.-based BI Incorporated unexpectedly hit its data storage capacity Tuesday morning, which blocked notifications to prisons and other corrections agencies on about 16,000 people being tracked, BI spokesman Jock Waldo said.

S. STRABANE, Pa. — A South Strabane man police accused of beating his infant son to brain damage will go to trial.Keith Long, 25, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday. Investigators said Long’s 5-month-old son suffered permanent brain damage after he was severely abused.Long is charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of his son.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A former YMCA employee charged with sexually abusing four children had a request for the judge after being on the run for 19 years. Michael Bond’s attorney asked the judge to reduce his bond and to dismiss the case altogether. Bond fled the country in 1991 shortly after a grand jury indicted him for sexually abusing four boys, all under age 12, while he was a counselor and swim coach at the YMCA Southwest in Louisville.

The head of New York’s children’s services agency says it’s still unclear whether child protective workers made enough visits to the home of a four-year-old Brooklyn girl before she was found dead last month — apparently abused and massively undernourished. Marchella Pierce was found dead in her Beford-Stuyvesant home on Sept. 2. Prosecutors allege Marchella was beaten. Police said she appeared severely underweight and may have been tied to a bed. She was born with lung problems.

TACOMA, Wash. — A 4 1/2-month-old baby who was fighting for life at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma after being assaulted has died, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News has learned.The baby’s 21-year-old father was arrested Tuesday morning, accused of assaulting the baby. Now that the baby has died, however, those charges could be amended to manslaughter. Police said the father, Michael Vanderveur, was caring for the child Last weekend when he called 911 at 8:15 a.m. on Sunday to report his baby boy, Ti-Ryn Emery, was not breathing.

Foster parent admits to sexually abused girl

A Rogue River man confessed his sins to his pastor before turning himself over to authorities and pleading guilty to sexually abusing a foster child living in his group home. The confession by David Richard Cosby, 60, who pleaded guilty in Jackson County Circuit Court to two counts of first-degree sex abuse, prompted police to seek out other foster children he cared for, to see if they also may have been abused.

Man Charged in Baby’s Death

South Charleston Police have charged a man in connection with the death of an 18-month old baby girl. Twenty-one year old Larry Hayes Junior is jailed on charges of child abuse resulting in death. Police say the young Rebecca McDaniel was in his care when she was seriously injured last week. The child’s mother is Hayes’ live-in girlfriend. She was at work at the time the child was injured.

Police say the incident happened last Thursday. According to a criminal complaint the mother, Meredith Bush said Hayes called her at work to say something was wrong with the child. When he arrived with the baby, it wasn’t breathing. The baby was taken to CAMC Women’s and Children’s hospital where it lived on a ventilator with no brain activity until she died Sunday.

Man Sentenced for Abuse of 3-yr old Daughter

A 41-year-old Sheboygan man has been sentenced to two years in prison for a June incident in which he choked his girlfriend and injured their 3-year-old daughter while trying to yank her away. Solomon Byrd Sr., of 2225-A N. 15th St., was sentenced Monday by Judge L. Edward Stengel to the prison term and four years extended supervision, matching the joint recommendation made by the prosecution and defense as part of a plea agreement, according to court records released Wednesday. Byrd was convicted of felony child abuse recklessly causing harm and strangulation and suffocation.

AMBER Alert Program

The AMBER Alert Program, named for 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, is a voluntary partnership between law-enforcement agencies, broadcasters, and transportation agencies to activate an urgent bulletin in the most serious child-abduction cases. Broadcasters use the Emergency Alert System (EAS) to air a description of the abducted child and suspected abductor. The goal of an AMBER Alert is to instantly galvanize the entire community to assist in the search for and safe recovery of the child.

CPS Investigations Ineffective

Investigations by Child Protective Services (CPS) agencies following suspected episodes of child abuse were seldom followed by improvements in household risk factors for future abuse — casting doubt on the agencies’ effectiveness, researchers said.

Among 595 households followed in a longitudinal study of risk factors for child abuse, those subjected to CPS investigations showed few major differences afterward in abuse risks that existed before the inspection, compared with households that had not been assessed, according to Kristine A. Campbell, MD, MSc, of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, and colleagues.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Here’s another update on a story we featured last year — a horrific case of child abuse that stuck with me for awhile. Back in April of ’09, 34-year-old Angelo Mendoza, allegedly high on PCP, attacked his 4-year-old son and chewed out one of his eyeballs. The other one he mutilated. When Wheelchair bound, he made his way to a neighbor’s home and crawled into the back yard, stripped naked and began hacking off his own leg with a pickax while yelling incoherently. Ramon Rodriguez wrestled the ax away from him and then went to check on the man’s son. He found him laying on the ground with bites to his hands and both eyes swollen shut. “My daddy ate my eyes out,” the little boy told him.

LAWRENCE, Kansas – Back in June, police began investigating a couple after two sisters ages 8 and 10, told their parents that a family friend, 32-year-old Donald L. Brown, had been raping them repeatedly over the last two years. He would eventually be charged with rape of a child under 14 years of age, three counts of aggravated criminal sodomy of a child under 14 years of age and two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

NORCO ( KTLA) — A 6-year-old Norco boy who was struck by a hit-and-run minivan driver is speaking out about the ordeal. Boston Granda was riding a motorized scooter when he was struck by a female driving a brown minivan at Garden Grove Avenue and Huerta Way around 4:30 p.m. Monday, according to authorities. Deputies say the driver sped from the scene.

Man Gets 1-Year for Sexually Abusing Boy

NEWARK — A 20-year-old man was sentenced to a year in prison after he admitted to sexually abusing a young boy over several years. Joshua S. George, of Pataskala, pleaded guilty to four counts of gross sexual imposition, a third-degree felony, at a hearing Thursday. George initially was charged in Licking County Juvenile Court because he was between 13 and 17 years old when the crimes occurred. The victim was between 2 and 6 years old.
