LOS ANGELES (KTLA) — The LAPD released images of 180 women taken by the alleged ” Grim Sleeper” on Thursday in the hope that family or friends will recognize them and contact authorities. In July, when Los Angeles police arrested Lonnie Franklin Jr., the man accused of being the notorious “Grim Sleeper” serial killer, they searched his South L.A. home for incriminating evidence and found nearly 1,000 still photographs and hours of video showing women, almost all of them partly or completely nude and striking sexually graphic poses.

SEATTLE — Five teens are facing charges for an attack on a pregnant woman on a Metro bus. The incident happened last month in downtown Seattle. Police say the teens entered the bus at Westlake and started fighting with the pregnant woman’s boyfriend in the back of the bus. Court documents say they took an MP3 player from a 17-year-old, Jessica M. Redmon-Beckstead, and her boyfriend, Jason Decoste, on Nov. 19 and then beat and kicked them in an attack caught on surveillance video. The Seattle Times reports that when the boyfriend told them to stop because his girlfriend was pregnant, one said they weren’t hitting her stomach, just her face.

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) — Federal authorities in Los Angeles say they have busted an international child porn message board known as ‘Lost Boy.” The members-only group spanned three continents and resulted in at least 16 arrests, agents say. Indictments were returned last year in Los Angeles for some of the people facing child pornography charges. Investigators say suspects have been charged in Romania, France and Brazil, while others have been convicted in Norway and the United Kingdom. The various defendants used the names “HarryPotter,” “Bottles&Cans,” “Undy12” and “WoodenDoll” to post explicit pictures on the Texas-based bulletin board. Authorities say the ‘Lost Boy’ bulletin board, which was shut down 2 years ago, was dedicated to men who had a sexual interest in young boys and screened members using a thorough vetting process.

Dallas, TX — Police say 37-year-old Carlnelus Delaney Simmons intentionally dipped his girlfriend’s toddler into a pot of boiling water last month, causing third-degree burns to the child’s feet, legs, buttocks and hand. After spending nearly five weeks in the hospital, Jabraylon Bables, just 16-months-old, died from his injuries on Saturday. On November 5, Simmons, a convicted murderer, called 911 to report that Jabraylon had been severely injured while in his care. He told first responders that he had accidentally spilled hot water on the kid. His story, of course, didn’t jibe with the injuries and he was hauled in on charges of felony injury to a child. Doctors say the skin had melted off of Jabraylon’s legs and feet. Surgeons had to remove more than 60 percent of his intestines in two separate operations. He suffered kidney failure and his body was so swollen, he was unrecognizable. The medical examiner has ruled the death a homicide.

MONROVIA — A 6-month-old girl remained hospitalized in guarded condition Wednesday after being snatched by a neighbor’s Great Dane and dragged away. Police say the child’s mother was visiting her neighbor on Monday when the 170-pound dog took the infant right out of her arms. The dog carried the baby about 200 feet before letting go. The child was flown to the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center to be treated for bite injuries to the chest, police said.

WASHINGTON — It’s the end of the traditional crib that has cradled millions of babies for generations. The government outlawed drop-side cribs on Wednesday after the deaths of more than 30 infants and toddlers in the past decade and millions of recalls. It was a unanimous vote by the Consumer Product Safety Commission to ban the manufacture, sale and resale of the cribs, which have a side rail that moves up and down, allowing parents to more easily lift their child from the crib. The new standard requiring cribs to have fixed sides would take effect in June. The move by CPSC would also prohibit hotels and childcare centers from using drop-sides, though those facilities would have a year to purchase new cribs.

(CNN) — A substitute preschool teacher suspected of molesting up to 50 children has been arrested in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, the international police organization Interpol said. Dutch prosecution officials have said the 27-year-old man, known as “Robert M,” confessed to abusing dozens of children and had images of child sexual abuse at his home, according to a statement Monday from Interpol.

Florida is number ONE for the most reported child abuse deaths. Louisiana is among the states with the highest frequency of child deaths related to abuse and neglect, according to an analysis highlighted Tuesday by a coalition of prosecutors and other child advocates. The National Coalition to End Child Abuse Deaths named Louisiana among 12 states with disproportionate numbers of cases that the consortium’s members said are preventable if the United States makes the issue a priority.

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (Reuters) – The Knights of Columbus was sued on Tuesday by two men who said they were sexually abused as children by a leader of a youth group run by the Roman Catholic fraternal organization. The federal lawsuits allege that Knights of Columbus officials knew a leader of the Columbian Squires youth group in Texas was molesting children but did not make any effort to stop him or remove him from the position. The suits are believed to be the first child sex abuse claims filed against the Catholic group, said Jeffrey Herman, the attorney representing the two alleged victims.

COYLE — Members of three families who live in rundown homes on a patch of eastern Logan County land littered with trash and abandoned vehicles have been arrested in connection with the sexual abuse of children. The Logan County Sheriff’s Department arrested 11 people who lived at the homes on N Meridian Road. Four people were arrested in October, and seven others were arrested Monday on complaints ranging from first-degree rape to enabling child abuse. Logan County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Rob Groseclose said the investigation began in September after a call was placed to a Department of Human Services tip line.

AUSTRALIA–Child abuse remains prevalent, even today. The question remains: how prevalent? The social stigma around child abuse means that it gets swept under the carpet time and again. We know how many cases of abuse are being reported and how many cases are substantiated each year. However, it is impossible to know how many children are being abused every day but are too afraid to say anything. In response to the growing awareness around child abuse, several laws have been set in place to protect children from further abuse. In every state in Australia mandatory reporting laws have been introduced (Higgins, Bromfield, & Richardson, 2007). These laws mandate that professionals who work with children are legally obliged to make a report about any child they suspect is in danger of abuse. These laws differ state-by-state, but are in place Australia-wide in some form. In spite of mandatory reporting laws, statistics suggest that child abuse remains prevalent.

BARTLESVILLE — A $500,000 bond has been set for a 20-year-old Bartlesville man charged with felony child abuse involving 2-month-old twins, one of which suffered skull fractures and bleeding in the brain. Bartlesville police arrested Chester Tanner Cooper, who is the father of the twins, on Monday after he admitted using force on the infant boys over a four-day period. District Judge Curtis DeLapp set bond for Cooper during his initial appearance on the charges Tuesday. Bartlesville police were called to Jane Phillips Medical Center on Monday when one of the boys arrived in the emergency room with serious head injuries, a court affidavit stated.

WATERLOO, Iowa — The rate of reported cases of child abuse and neglect rose 50 percent in Black Hawk County between 2000 and 2009, according to a report issued by an Iowa child advocacy group. Kids Count, a study by the Child and Family Policy Center in Des Moines reveals some good news and bad news in the Cedar Valley. The 50 percent rise in reports in child abuse and neglect in Black Hawk County outpaced the statewide rise of 35 percent.
