A new study on child abuse — the first to look at the differences in head trauma perpetrated by men and women — may shed some light on this type of abuse, but raises even more questions about how many cases go undetected. The study looked at 48 cases of abusive head trauma in children brought to a Long Island hospital between 1998 and 2008. In 34 of those cases, perpetrators were identified. Seventeen were male and the other 17 female.

A newborn was cared for in a hospital Saturday night after witnesses said the mother threw the baby in the snow. The baby was only wearing a T-shirt and was wrapped in a blanket. The mother, 21-year-old Ashley Couch, is accused of throwing her infant in a snow bank near Chicago Avenue and 18th Street Saturday morning.

A Clayton, Missouri hotel guest molested a 9-year-old girl after obtaining a room key to a room that was not his. Police said around 4 a.m. on Sunday the suspect entered the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Clayton, Missouri in an intoxicated condition. He had been staying with a registered guest. He approached the front desk and told the clerk he was staying in a specific room, but did not have his room key.

Police in Louisiana have arrested a 26-year-old man on charges that he molested a 7-year-old girl on multiple occasions. After being taken into custody, Daniel Paz, of Metairie, then admitted to investigators that he had in fact molested the girl in three separate incidents and even told them that the child came onto him and was the aggressor in all of this.

MIAMI, Fl. — The adoptive mother of a Florida girl found dead in a plastic bag in her husband’s truck has been charged with first-degree murder, police said Saturday. Carmen Barahona also faces seven counts of aggravated child abuse and seven counts of child neglect, the Miami-Dade Police Department said in a press release.

TACOMA, Wash. — A convicted sex offender is suing the mother of a child he had inappropriate contact with because he says she wrote negative things about him on her blog. Patrick Rojas, 26, plead guilty in 2007 to a gross misdemeanor for contact with a minor for immoral purposes. But Danielle Schneider says that charge didn’t come close to describing what Rojas did to her 11-year-old child. Schneider decided to blog about it and warn others.

“It is not now, nor has it ever been your fault!” Sexual abuse in any form is never the fault of a child or teenager. There is nothing you could possibly say, do, infer, ask for, or initiate that can remove the responsibility every adult has to protect and nurture children and teenagers. Despite any instruction from anyone that has abused you, protected your abuser, encouraged you to keep silent, or in any way kept the fact of your being a victim to a vile criminal act from those that can help you, realize your life and your future is not theirs to manipulate or control.

The third annual “It Happens to Boys” conference, a two-day program designed to raise awareness of child sexual abuse, kicks off today at the Doral Desert Princess Resort hotel in Cathedral City.The program is presented by Creative Change Conferences, a nonprofit organization led by Carol Teitelbaum, a Rancho Mirage-based Marriage & Family Therapist, who also serves on Riverside County’s Prevent Child Abuse council.

OCONEE COUNTY, SC –24-year-old Matthew Hinton was sentenced to 41 years in prison Thursday, convicted of killing his infant daughter. 5-month-old Brianna Bright suffered from bruises, broken bones, and bleeding on her brain before she died in August of 2009. A jury found her father, Matthew Hinton, guilty of homicide by child abuse.

Greenville, Mississippi – Terrie A. Robinson, a 24-year-old Greenville woman was jailed Wednesday after her 3-year-old son was found deceased in an oven. According to Greenville Police, officer’s were called to Robinson’s apartment for an undisclosed emergency shortly after midnight. When officers arrived, they reportedly found the charred and still warm body of 3-year-old Tristan Robinson inside an electric oven.

Crystal Lake, New York – Mark S. Seranella, a 22-year-old Oswego inmate faces new charges after he allegedly propositioned a 13-year-old girl for sex from a phone inside the jail. According to the Crystal Lake Police Department, Seranella was sentenced to four years in jail last year after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges.

Bail was set today for two men accused of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl while she was attending a sleepover party for one of the suspects’ younger sister.

Steven Johnson, 19, of the 17800 block of Chicago Avenue in Lansing, and Daniel Rucker, 20, of Calumet City, are both charged with predatory criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony.

FLUSHING — The NYPD is investigating whether a mother helped her son, who suffers from cerebral palsy, kill himself. The woman called 9-1-1 for help, saying she had an argument and her son was hurt. When police arrived, he was already dead. Beverly, a home health aide who declined to give her last name, works across the hall from apartment 3-C in the Latimer Houses on 137th Street where Rene Vera was stabbed to-death.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orange County sheriff’s detectives said a mother and her boyfriend had pizza and watched a movie after beating a little boy for an hour because he wet his pants. Robin Greinke, 26, and her boyfriend, Steven Neil, 33, were arrested Thursday after the medical examiner determined Greinke’s 3-year-old son died of blunt-force trauma and not a medical issue as initially believed.
