Internet Child Abuse Increase

Posted by Sandra On February - 17 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Children Commissioner Helen D’Amato: “In the past bullying stopped at the school door, today it is 24/7.”

By the time cases of child abuse over the internet reach the police, they are much “too messy”, according to Police Inspector Trevor Sammut from the cybercrimes unit. He appealed to kids to continue enjoying these tools but to be supervised responsibly and taught about the consequences of their bad use. Mr Sammut was speaking at the launch of the national initiative BeSmartOnline, set up for a safer internet, establishing, operating and promoting reporting facilities for abuse and providing support to victims and their families.

Tokyo, Japan— She is a precocious little girl, in pigtails and rainbow rimmed glasses, all spark and determination. The 11- year-old attacks origami with the mission to build a flying bird. Creating an object of beauty contrasts with the ugliness this child has suffered at the hands of her own parents. The director of Nonohana-No-ie orphanage nods at us, signaling this girl is one of the of abused children who reside at this protective facility. Seventy percent of the children here, between the ages of 2 and 18, are victims of abuse and neglect so severe the police removed them from their parents’ custody.

AFRICA–Boys as young as 13 are still being used as soldiers by the Chadian national army and armed groups on the border with Sudan, Amnesty International said in a report. “It is tragic that thousands of children are denied their childhood and are manipulated by adults into fighting their wars,” the 55-page report quoted Erwin van der Borght, the rights group’s Africa director, as saying.

Stanley Willis was sentenced to probation 20 years ago in Cincinnati after a boy accused him of sexual abuse and he was convicted of child endangering. He avoided jail again last year when he was sentenced to probation in Florida for attempting “lewd and lascivious molestation” of another boy. But now Willis faces up to 10 years in federal prison – not for touching a child but for viewing child pornography on his computer.

Trends in Childhood Violence and Abuse Exposure

A new national study conducted by CCRC researchers shows that bullying, sexual assault, and other violence against children declined substantially between 2003 and 2008. The percentage of children reporting physical bullying in the past year declined from 22% to 15%, while the percentage reporting a sexual assault went from 3.3% to 2%. The study did not find declines in physical abuse or neglect by caregivers, but did find a decline in psychological abuse. Robbery was one of the few offenses that increased in frequency.

GOP’s Plan to Redefine Rape

Drugged, raped, and pregnant? Too bad. Republicans are pushing to limit rape and incest cases eligible for government abortion funding.

Rape is only really rape if it involves force? So says the new House Republican majority as it now moves to change abortion law. For years, federal laws restricting the use of government funds to pay for abortions have included exemptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. (Another exemption covers pregnancies that could endanger the life of the woman.) But the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” a bill with 173 mostly Republican co-sponsors that House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has dubbed a top priority in the new Congress, contains a provision that would rewrite the rules to limit drastically the definition of rape and incest in these cases.

PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION TO OPPOSE the Republicans plan to “redefine rape” thus making only “certain” rapes count as rape. Rape is rape–PERIOD.

Although child sexual abuse is reported almost 90,000 times a year, the numbers of unreported abuse is far greater because the children are afraid to tell anyone what has happened, and the legal procedure for validating an episode is difficult (American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, 2004). It is estimated that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will have experienced an episode of sexual abuse while younger than 18 years. The numbers of boys affected may be falsely low because of reporting techniques (Botash, Ann, MD, Pediatric Annual.

BJS has developed a new data query tool for the FBI that improves access to the FBI’s UCR data and includes the latest available crime data (2009). The tool was developed for the FBI as part of on-going collaboration between the two agencies to improve crime data accessibility and provide information to the public. More information about methodology and best practices for using the new tool are available at http://www.UCRDataTool.gov/. The official OJP press release related to this new tool contains additional details about this collaboration.

It is almost a rhythmic pattern that every day, a school child is beaten by their teacher somewhere around Zimbabwe. Some are beaten so severely they have to seek medical attention.  Although no figures are yet available to substantiate the extent of this violence, media reports have shown that corporal punishment is still being meted out on pupils in violation of standing rules over the matter. Children are beaten with sticks, whips, rulers, boards and many other objects from pre-school right up to high school.

This week alone, two baby girls were rushed to Hurley Medical Center after police say they were shaken by their fathers. One of the girls died as a result of her injuries. We spoke to a pediatric emergency medicine doctor who has treated a wide range of cases at Hurley Medical Center in Flint. He says many of these cases are caused by everything from a lack of parenting skills or the impact of a tough economy, which is why he says early education is key.
