A report from the Iowa Department of Human Services shows cases of child abuse rose by 69 percent in Muscatine County and 50 percent in Louisa County from 2009 to 2010. Counselors at the Mississippi Valley Child Protection Center in Muscatine offer care for children who have been abused. They say they are concerned about the rise in reports but say it also means that people are doing a better job when it comes to reporting child abuse.

The Las Lomas junior was a seventh grader at Walnut Creek Intermediate when her father beat her savagely. “He whipped me with a belt,” she said. She asked that her name not be used. “My foot got tangled in an extension cord so he whipped me with that. It started to get stuck into my leg and my arms and my back and I still have marks from it. I was mostly screaming the whole time, so I couldn’t really cry. I told him I was bleeding and he was like, ‘You’ll live.’ It lasted for a very long time.”

In the field of Law Enforcement we deal with many different types of crime, and all of the victims of these crimes are equally important and deserve justice. However, one of the most difficult crimes that an officer must face is that of child molestation. These innocent victims are helpless against their abusers and these crimes are amongst the most abhorrent that a law enforcement official will handle.

A new study on child abuse — the first to look at the differences in head trauma perpetrated by men and women — may shed some light on this type of abuse, but raises even more questions about how many cases go undetected. The study looked at 48 cases of abusive head trauma in children brought to a Long Island hospital between 1998 and 2008. In 34 of those cases, perpetrators were identified. Seventeen were male and the other 17 female.

Sexual Abuse Of Boys

Stop Sign With Man's Hand

“It is not now, nor has it ever been your fault!” Sexual abuse in any form is never the fault of a child or teenager. There is nothing you could possibly say, do, infer, ask for, or initiate that can remove the responsibility every adult has to protect and nurture children and teenagers. Despite any instruction from anyone that has abused you, protected your abuser, encouraged you to keep silent, or in any way kept the fact of your being a victim to a vile criminal act from those that can help you, realize your life and your future is not theirs to manipulate or control.

Florida’s Deadly Toll Of Abuse

Posted by Sandra On March - 1 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS
BABY BOY 2The annual report compiled by the Florida Child Abuse Death Review Committee is always grim reading. But the information is important. The committee’s scope does not include all child fatalities in Florida — just those reported to the state abuse hotline and verified as maltreatment, including neglect and abuse. Nearly 200 cases met those parameters in 2009 (the latest available figures).

Child Abuse Cases Up

The details of Nubia Barahona’s death are grisly: Soaked in toxic chemicals, decomposed and stuffed in a garbage bag, she was found rotting on the shoulder of the interstate on Valentines Day. Authorities believe she had been stashed in a septic tank for weeks before her adoptive father dug up her corpse.

Statistically, however, Nubia’s story is rather common: She is one of hundreds of Florida children who died of abuse or neglect during the last decade after child welfare authorities had performed at least one investigation into their welfare. Florida not only leads the United States in the number of such deaths, it dominates the nation.

Posted by Sandra On February - 25 - 2011 2 COMMENTS

‘Child abuse, financial crisis linked’

The US Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration (USDHHS) reports that child abuse has reached epidemic proportions with parents being the primary abusers. “Many of our directors tell us their child abuse reports have risen,” said Crystal Ward Allen, director for Public Children Services Association of Ohio.  Parents comprised the largest group of abusers, at 80 percent, with 9 out of 10 abusers being the children’s biological parents.

Incest & Sex Abuse of Children

Children's hands 2

One common form of sexual abuse of children is incest, which has been defined as sexual contact that occurs between family members. Most incest occurs between older male relatives and younger female children in families of every class and color. Other instances of sexual abuse of children are most often committed by friends who have access to children within the family setting and by people normally trusted by parents: doctors, dentists, teachers, and baby-sitters.

Abuse Increasing In Colorado

Study: Child abuse, neglect up in Colorado

DENVER — The rate of child abuse and neglect in Colorado is on the rise, in sharp contrast to the rest of the nation, which has seen a decrease over the last several years. That troubling conclusion comes in a new report from the Kempe Center for Child Abuse and Prevention, based in Denver. The study has experts in this field asking some tough questions like:

  • Has too much money been cut from prevention programs?
  • Are people who are suffering economically taking it out on their kids?
  • Are agencies at fault for not doing enough to identify, intervene and help families at high risk?
  • Why is the number of child abuse and neglect cases increasing in Colorado, while the rest of the nation is experiencing a decrease?

In an interview set to broadcast Feb. 20, Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown (R) told CBS that he had been sexually abused by a camp counselor when he was 10 years old. Such an experience is more common than most people believe, according to researchers who specialize in studying childhood sexual abuse. But victims, especially male victims, often feel silenced by shame, researchers say.
