SOUTH LOS ANGELES, CA– Miramonte teacher, Martin Springer, was formally charged with 3 counts of lewd acts with a child Tuesday. Springer, 49, is accused of inappropriate behavior with a female student during a three-month period in 2009. He is expected to be arraigned on felony charges Tuesday. READ MORE HERE
LOS ANGELES, CA — A mother now faces child endangerment charges after authorities say she left her 6-month-old baby with a homeless couple and then disappeared. It happened Monday night about 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of 3rd and Main streets in downtown Los Angeles, according to police. READ MORE HERE
Jeffrey Dean McDaniel is wanted in Placer County, California, for his alleged repeated sexual contact with a minor female relative. The girl was thirteen years old at the time of the abuse. In September of 1998, McDaniel left the area with the girl and her whereabouts remained unknown until she was located in Mexico in September of 2000. According to the girl, McDaniel had traveled with her throughout California and Nevada before ending up in Mexico. McDaniel continued to sexually assault the girl, which resulted in a pregnancy. McDaniel’s whereabouts remain unknown. On February 28, 2001, an arrest warrant was issued for McDaniel after he was charged with child custody deprivation. A federal arrest warrant was issued in May of 2001, and McDaniel was charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. READ MORE HERE

Marion Taylor is wanted for his alleged molestation of a female victim when she was eight years old in Newark, New Jersey. A local arrest warrant was issued for Taylor on August 20, 2010, and he was charged with sexual assault as well as endangering the welfare of a child. A federal arrest warrant was issued on March 10, 2011, in the District of New Jersey, and Taylor was charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. READ MORE HERE
We’ve all known it’s been a really bad problem for a long, long time. But across the nation, new data are surfacing to illustrate just how bad the problem is – and what must be done to keep the epidemic of child abuse and neglect from worsening. Just last week, a 23-member legislative committee issued its report on the state’s foster-care system, recommending, among other steps, that state leaders “adequately fund” the child-welfare system. The Foster Care System Improvement Task Force called for increasing reimbursement rates and providing more resources and training for foster parents, adding more trauma training for child-welfare workers and other professionals, and improving compensation for child-welfare workers.
“We thought it would be fun to have a lot of children” is a quote attributed to Robert L. Gaskill (63) of River Forest, IL, taken from a 2009 interview with the Pioneer Press’ Forest Leaves. Gaskill, who had fostered about 75 different children over the years, was ordered to be held on a $50 million cash bond yesterday (Sat., Feb. 4) for allegedly sexually assaulting two of his female foster children. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Gaskill, molested the minors over a period between 1996 to 2009. READ MORE HERE
TEMECULA — A Temecula woman was sentenced Friday to 19 years to life in prison for driving under the influence in a crash that killed her 9-year-old daughter. Karen Faye Honeycutt, 41, admitted to drunk driving and pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter in the death of her daughter, Chloe Honeycutt, in January 2011. She also pleaded guilty to inflicting great bodily harm on two of her other children who survived the crash. READ MORE HERE
The news clip reports that the father uses this method as punishment when his daughter misbehaves. The incident occurred at 3:40pm February 3rd at a shopping center in Hangzhou. The father had purchased some newspapers on their way home, which his daughter apparently threw on the ground. Angry, and with his daughter crying loudly, he dragged her to the men’s restrooms. SACRAMENTO, CA — Prosecutors announced Friday that they would seek a sentence of life without parole for a mother accused of killing her baby by putting her in a microwave oven. Ka Yang, 30, faces murder and torture charges. Prosecutors said her lack of a criminal background deterred them from pursuing the death penalty. READ MORE HERE
Two 16-year-old girls who were ‘kidnapped’ in the middle of the night by two boys they met online have been found. Teenagers Amber Henry and Kirsten Kamradt were discovered by U.S. marshals and FBI agents after they were forced across state lines by the 19-year-old boys. The two girls, who are from Georgia, went missing from their homes early on Wednesday. They were thought to have been picked up in a white Buick at about 1am by driver Joshua Crowe and his friend Dustin Elliott. READ MORE HERE
Josh Powell, a person of interest in the Dec. 6, 2009 disappearance of his wife Susan, killed himself and the couple’s two young sons on Sunday in a planned, intentional explosion, police confirm Sunday. According to the The Seattle Times, a case worker delivered the boys to Powell’s house Sunday near Tacoma, Wash., when Powell pushed the worker out of the house. Moments later, there was an explosion. Officials have recovered three bodies from the house that they believe are Josh Powell and his sons Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5. READ MORE HERE
MILWAUKEE — About 550 people are asking for restitution for alleged sexual abuse by clergy in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee — more than in any of the other U.S. dioceses that have filed for bankruptcy protection, according to a lawyer involved in the Milwaukee case. The Milwaukee Archdiocese filed for bankruptcy protection last year, saying pending sex-abuse lawsuits could leave it with debts it couldn’t afford. READ MORE HERE
Frantic parents of the now 15 teens who have been showcasing worrying Tourette-like symptoms are looking for answers as to what exactly is making their children sick. Over the weekend, lawyer Erin Brockivich hypothesized that environmental toxins may be to blame, though officials have reportedly stonewalled her up to this point. But now researchers are now looking into a new explanation – that infections caused by bacteria or viruses can cause also infect the brain, leading to onsets of Tourette’s and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Fifteen of the affected go to Le Roy High School in Genesee County, New York State. Only one boy has been affected, the other 14 sufferers are girls. READ MORE HERE
A 61-year-old Danish man confessed to intimidating and harassing an 11-year-old girl online and trying to convince her to send him naked pictures of herself. The man, Kai Ludrstroem Pedersen, found the girl through Facebook and extorted her into make child pornography. The girl, whose name is being withheld by the courts because of her age, began talking with the man in June 2010 when she believed he was a 14-year-old boy.
