Kentucky Ranks No. 1 In Country For Child Abuse Deaths

LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

Last year, 86,454 children were involved in reports of child abuse or neglect made to the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services Department of Protection and Permanency.Child abuse experts said the number of reported cases is far from the actual number of incidents.

SUSPECT
Robert Roland Yerton Jr.: Accused of lewd molestation and sexual abuse, he has been a teacher, children’s minister and youth group leader.

Believing that there could be more victims who have yet to come forward, Tulsa police are continuing to investigate the Skelly Elementary School assistant principal who has been charged with three sex offenses against children.

Robert Roland Yerton Jr., 41, is charged in Tulsa County District Court with the lewd molestation of a 6-year-old boy in a school office on Oct. 21 and two counts of sexual abuse involving a boy he is related to between 2003 and 2009.

Police said their investigation also revealed that a former student is a third apparent victim of sexual abuse, but no charges regarding that student were filed because the allegations stem from a 1996 incident, which is outside the statute of limitations.

Signs of physical abuse include visible marks of maltreatment, such as cuts, bruises, welts, or well-defined burns, and reluctance to go home. Also, the agency notes, “If you ask a child about how he or she got hurt and the child talks vaguely or evasively about falling off a fence or spilling a hot dish, think hard before you accept the child’s story at face value.”

People should also be alert to signs of sexual abuse such as inappropriate interest in or knowledge of sexual acts, seductive behavior, a reluctance or refusal to undress in front of others and fear of a particular person or family member.

SUFFERN, N.Y. — Pro Football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor was charged Thursday with raping a 16-year-old runaway in an encounter that police said was arranged by a man who beat her up before driving her to Taylor’s suburban hotel room while she texted her uncle for help.

Taylor, the 51-year-old former New York Giant who has faced drug and tax evasion charges in the past, paid the girl $300 for sex in a Holiday Inn, where he was arrested early Thursday, said Christopher St. Lawrence, supervisor of the town of Ramapo.

BELLEFONTE — In a style of courtroom drama usually reserved for scripted television, a former North Carolina professor sealed his fate in Centre County court Wednesday as he and his defense attorney engaged in role-play, reading aloud to jurors the extremely explicit and foul-language cybersex conversations he had with the 12-year-old Julian boy that he was accused of raping.

In the nine months between June 2009 and April 2010, 75 children have been killed by fathers involved in volatile custody battles with their former partners, according to the Center for Judicial Excellence, a court advocacy organization which has been tracking news articles of such deaths around the U.S. Based in San Rafael, California, the Center focuses on strengthening court integrity as well as improving public accountability of the judiciary.

OREGON CITY, Ore. — Prosecutors showed graphic pictures in court Thursday in what they called one of the worst child abuse cases they’ve ever seen.

Assault, criminal mistreatment and reckless endangerment charges against 23-year-old Derek Piskorski stem from the alleged abuse of a 3-year-old boy. Piskorski was dating the child’s mother.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – A Chesapeake father pleaded guilty Thursday, to killing his 5 year old daughter.

Police arrested Joshua Sawyer in June 2009 after the death of his daughter, Carly. Officers responded to his Oliver Avenue home to investigate a complaint of child abuse. Police said the little girl was confined in a box, tied up, beaten and denied food.

OKEECHOBEE COUNTY, FL – Deputy Sarah Green is a mother and grandmother, so she’ll never forget that moment on April 21st.  Green had been sent to do a welfare check on 2-year old Lilly Harden.

Someone opened the door of their trailer on Highway 98 and told Green the little girl and her mother weren’t home.

GENESEE CO. — Police say 4-year-old Dominick Calhoun endured days of torture before his death in April. Now, his family is taking action to save other children from a similar fate.

The child did not die quietly. His mother, 25-year-old Corrine Baker, says she yelled for help as her boyfriend, 24 year old Brandon Hayes, beat her and her child for several days.

(Reuters) – A Catholic diocese in eastern Spain said Tuesday one of its monks is suspected of abusing a child and asked for the family’s forgiveness, the first such abuse charge to become public in Spain.

The diocese of Segorbe-Castellon said in a statement the monk was from the Order of “Los Carmelitas Descalzos” and his superiors had taken action against him.

The term child abuse itself is often a non-descript term as so many issues fall under the term. FindLaw.com reports that child abuse is broadly defined, in many states, as any type of cruelty inflicted upon a child, including mental abuse, physical harm, neglect, and sexual abuse or exploitation. Specific crimes charged in instances of child abuse can include assault and battery.

Over three million reports of child abuse are made every year in the United States; however, those reports can include multiple children. In 2007, (the most recent national numbers available), approximately 5.8 million children were involved in an estimated 3.2 million child abuse reports and allegations.
