Amid heightened awareness about child safety, local parishes have changed

VERONA — On the rare occasion when the Rev. William Vernon hugs a child at St. Andrew Catholic Church, almost everything about the interaction has been carefully considered.

Since 2001, when a flurry of high-profile lawsuits against the Catholic Church reignited a child abuse scandal, Vernon has made it his personal policy not to initiate hugs with children. He encourages handshakes, high-fives and fist bumps instead.

Around 785 children were abused last year in Switzerland according to the biggest statistical snapshot to date, but experts say the real number could be higher.

A study by the Swiss paediatrics society pulled together figures for 2009 from 14 of the country’s biggest paediatrics institutions, for the first time giving an overall scale of the problem.

Lawrence Taylor Charged With Raping 16-year old Runaway

Taylor charged with statutory rape and soliciting a minor prostitute.

SUFFERN, N.Y. — Pro Football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor was charged Thursday with raping a 16-year-old runaway who police said was forced into prostitution by a man who had beaten her up.

TROY — A father and son have been arrested on felony sexual assault charges for allegedly abusing the same child.

Scott Wolf, 40, and his 18-year old son Robert are charged with first-degree misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child and felony first-degree course of sexual conduct against a child.

Police say that 31-year-old Toby Cundiff repeatedly raped the child from June 2005 to November 2009 starting when she was 7-years-old. The girl, now a teenager, told her mother recently who then went to police.

East Lampeter police charged him with with rape, rape of a child, statutory sexual assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault and corruption of minors. Warwick Township police charged him with rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault of a child, indecent exposure, corruption of minors, open lewdness and indecent assault of a person less than 13 years of age.

Suspect suspended from Boy Scouts:
A 25-year-old Florida has been arrested for allegedly producing child pornography.

Agents say the investigation against 25-year-old Adam Brigham initially began in January when an undercover officer posing as a teenage boy was approached via MySpace by the Palm Bay resident.

Brigham had purportedly solicited sex and sent the detective explicit pictures using MySpace.

INDIANA–On the heels of a discouraging child fatality report, Indiana’s Department of Child Services released figures on child abuse and neglect cases showing almost a 24 percent increase statewide. HOBBS, N.M. (KBIM-KRQE) – Police responding to a medical call in Hobbs Friday morning found a 21-month-old child dead and later arrested the infant’s mother and the man who was with her.

Melinda Copeland, 21, and Christopher Elliott, 27, are both charged with child abuse resulting in death and a separate charge of child abuse related to a 3-year-old child of Copeland’s, according to the Hobbs Police Department.

A Covington County man is behind bars accused of torture and willful abuse of a child.

Twenty four year old Jeremy Edward Gibson of Andalusia is charged with one count of aggravated child abuse.
Officials say Gibson confessed to committing acts that caused injuries to a seven week old infant.
