MORGANTON – The mother of a toddler who was taken to Carolinas Medical Center last week due to brain injuries has been charged with misdemeanor child abuse.

Alecia Danielle Nanney, 24, of 4734 Homestead Way, Glen Alpine is scheduled to appear in court May 28.

Now, we’ve learned there were other children in the home at the time. The two-year-old who was killed had two siblings in the home at the time. One was 4, and the other, just a year-old.

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – In 2009 there were 20,649 reports of child abuse, and 41% of those were confirmed cases of child abuse.
In Utah, 69% of abusers are parents. Another 19% are another member of the child’s family.
The most common victims are young children, newborn to five years old. They account for 42% of cases.

A Rocky Mount woman sought on several felony child abuse and neglect charges has turned herself in to authorities.

Authorities arrested and charged Misty Lynch, 32, of Wildberry Drive with felony child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and animal cruelty. Deputies said Lynch turned herself in Saturday at the magistrate’s office in Nashville.

MIDLAND, TX – A Midland man is now behind bars in connection to a disturbing case of child abuse.

18-year-old Joseph Mark Charles is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a two year old and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

He is the live-in boyfriend of the Midland mother accused of almost beating her 19-month old son to death.

The investigation revealed that Monday Russell’s two month old son was taken to the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital after he was found unresponsive at his home in Williamson. The baby was flown out to Cabell Huntington Hospital and as of presstime remained in pediatric intensive care, allegedly the victim of ”shaken baby syndrome.”

”The baby sustained the injuries here in Williamson, after the mother left him in his father’s care while she went for a doctor’s appointment,” Rockel said.

A 68-year-old man sexually abused three young children after enticing them with offers of bicycles and the chance to dress up, West Australian police allege.

Police say the man, from Banksia Grove in Perth’s north, may have abused other children and they want to hear from parents in the suburb who have concerns.

OGDEN — A woman police found passed out on a lawn with her infant children in tow remains at large.

Crystal Suzanne Latham was 27 when she was arrested the night of Nov. 20, 2007, in the front yard of a Washington Terrace home.

Residents had called police to report her passed out drunk on their property with her two small children poorly dressed and crying, according to police. Weber County Sheriff’s deputies found Latham on the lawn, her 2-week-old daughter in a car seat lying on its side and her 2-year-old son in his pajamas with no shoes, according to the allegations. The temperature at the time, just before 11 p.m., was 29 degrees, but the children had not yet suffered injury. Latham remains charged with two counts of class A misdemeanor child abuse neglect and one count of class C misdemeanor public intoxication. She skipped her Feb. 27, 2008, trial in 2nd District Court in Ogden, with no new entries in her court file since then beyond reissuing a warrant for her arrest.

A Duluth man who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 4-year-old cited his own abuse as a child in asking Monday for less than the guideline sentence of 12 years in prison.

William Ray Prohaska, 37, pleaded guilty in St. Louis County District Court in January to first-degree criminal sexual conduct. He was accused of engaging in sexual penetration with a 4-year-old girl in 2008.

DUBLIN – A new report from a church-funded body set up to improve child protection procedures and policies reported nearly 200 new allegations of church-related child abuse in a year.

Ian Elliott, chief executive officer of the National Board for the Safeguarding of Children in the Catholic Church, said publication of two prominent reports on church abuse might have increased the number of victims coming forward to complain of abuse and that the number of allegations may well be down by the end of this reporting year in March 2011.

A Memphis man has been charged with beating a child to death using a basketball sneaker.

According to an affidavit, Calvin Jones told police he was babysitting the 2-year-old girl when she defecated on herself.

Jones says he used “a basketball shoe” and the back of his hand to hit her several times.

LOGANSPORT, Ind. (WISH) – Logansport police tell 24-Hour News 8 they’ve arrested a 22-year-old Logansport man for the brutal attack of a four-year-old girl .

Officers say William R. Wilson, II, faces three counts of child molestation (class A felonies) and one count of criminal confinement (a B felony). He’s currently in the Cass County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

DETROIT — An attorney for the family of a 7-year-old girl slain during a weekend raid at their Detroit home says video footage contradicts the police department’s version of events.

Geoffrey Fieger said Monday that footage shot by the A&E crime-reality show “The First 48” shows that police fired into the home at least once after lobbing a flash grenade through a window.
