Harrisburg, PA —Former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky was charged with numerous felony and misdemeanor offenses as the result of a grand jury investigation into sexual abuse of children, while the school’s athletic director was charged with perjury. The Pennsylvania attorney general’s office said in a press release Saturday that Sandusky was charged with 40 counts of various sexual crimes and taken into custody in Centre County.

TULSA, Okla. — Investigators plan to scour a vast patch of land in rural eastern Oklahoma this weekend in search of the body of a baby born to a young girl whose parents were arrested on child abuse charges. The girl told authorities her father helped her deliver the child at home, told her it was dead and buried it behind a goat pen. Goats and cows mulled about the property Friday while officials used a backhoe to dig for answers.

CBS-station WBBM says that prosecutors began investigating Robert Deja in July after learning of allegations that he had been sexually abusing his adopted daughter for four years. Law enforcement officials then learned she has a 3-year-old daughter fathered by Deja.

SANTA ANA, CA — A 20-year-old man was found guilty Thursday of second-degree murder and child abuse causing the death of his girlfriend’s 9-month-old son, Isaiah Prim-Ortiz. Alexander Barnes was 18 when he was babysitting Isaiah for the first time on October 6, 2009. Prosecutors say Barnes became angry because the baby wouldn’t stop crying. They contend he fractured the baby’s skull, killing him.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA — A 43-year-old woman is accused of having sex with a 12-year-old friend of her son. Patricia Ann Serrano, of Fountain Valley, is charged with three felony counts of lewd acts on a child under 14. On two occasions in October 2011, the defendant is accused of having sex with the 12-year-old boy in her home and in a car.

Ellen DeGeneres is “devastated” by the recent suicide of a Rutgers University student who was outed on the Internet, and says that “something must be done” about teen bullying. “This needs to be a wakeup call to everyone that teenage bullying and teasing is an epidemic in this country and the death rate is climbing,” DeGeneres says in a video taped at her studio.

Advocates for a law to prohibit bullying and provide school districts with the tools to address the problem were dealt a stinging rebuke Wednesday morning in the Republican-controlled Michigan Senate. The GOP pushed through an amended bill, SB 137, which does nothing advocates have pushed for — including reporting requirements and enumeration, or listing, of protected classes. In addition, the legislation provides an exception which allows bullying based on “moral convictions.”

A 46-year-old German Catholic priest has been indicted on 267 counts of sexual contact with children in the town of Salzgitter where he ran a parish, according to BNO News. The priest, who was unnamed, is accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting three boys between the ages of 5 and 9 since 2004.

Tri-Cities Abuse Cases Rising

GREENEVILLE, TN–Courts across the Tri-Cities region are hearing more cases involving alleged child abuse and neglect. That increase is causing more judges to request the help of court appointed special advocates and those volunteers are spread thin. In 2008, cCasa of Northeast Tennessee helped 242 families. That increased to 306 in 2010, and because of a recent expansion into circuit courts, Casa expects to be a voice for nearly 400 children this year.

Micheal Wills, the Lincoln man convicted of negligent child abuse in connection with the death of a 23-month-old, has been sentenced to one year in jail. A Lancaster County jury last month acquitted Wills of child abuse resulting in Carter Vetter’s death, opting instead for the misdemeanor. A year was the most Wills could get on the charge, and he’s already served more than that term while awaiting his trial.
