A statute of limitations (or SOL), simply, is the maximum amount of time one has to bring a lawsuit from the time of the injury or other ground for a lawsuit. SOLs vary from state to state and from claim to claim. The statute of limitations may also be set to begin running at different times. Some SOLs begin running at the time of the injury and others begin running when the injury is discovered. In cases with minors, the SOL is “tolled” or doesn’t begin to run until the minor turns 18. Some states, like Delaware and Florida, have eliminated the statue of limitations for child sexual abuse altogether; others also have a “discovery rule” which simply states that the statue of limitations do not begin to run until a claim “accrues.” (instead of the original date of injury)

A report from the US State Department has revealed that children are being subjected to prostitution in Dublin, Cork and Kilkenny. The State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report said that while Ireland was rated as a ‘tier one’ country, it cited reports from non-governmental organization (NGO) experts who said that children are being subjected to prostitution in places such as Dublin, Cork and Kilkenny.

The leader of a child exploitation ring who raped vulnerable teenage girls – who he told to call him ‘Daddy’. Shabir Ahmed, 59, was jailed last month but can only now be identified, after he was convicted of 30 more horrific rapes in a separate trial. He would befriend his teenage victims and ply them with alcohol before carrying out his attacks.

A woman was charged with abusing her 10-year-old daughter who weighed just 32 pounds when she was found locked in a closet that reeked of urine. The 29-year-old woman from Kansas City, Missouri was charged on Saturday with assault and child abuse and endangerment in Jackson County Circuit Court. The girl told detectives that her mother puts her in the closet ‘a lot,’ that she doesn’t get to eat every day and her mother will ‘punch her on her back real hard,’ according to authorities.

The eldest daughter of child killer Lianne Smith has said her ‘evil’ mother deserves to spend the rest of her life behind bars. A Spanish court this week found the 45-year-old guilty murdering of her children, 11-month-old Daniel and Rebecca, five, days after her partner was arrested on suspicion of raping Sarah Richardson as a child. Now Ms Richardson, 23, has told how she cannot bring herself to look at pictures of her mother, who ran away to the Costa Brava with pedophile TV hypnotist Martin Smith.

Mistie Rebecca Atkinson, 32, from northern California, was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison on Wednesday in Napa County Superior Court, after she made a sex tape with her 16-year-old son.

DEARBORN HEIGHTS — A convicted rapist this week was arrested on child pornography charges, and investigators believe he may also be involved in child-trafficking. Sonny Robert Miller, 52, was arraigned in U.S. District Court Thursday following a three-month investigation by U.S. Marshals. The investigation kicked off in March when Miller was arrested for home invasion in Dearborn. During detainment police found on Miller’s cell phone alleged pornographic videos of minors and sexually explicit text messages. One of the officers who reviewed the pictures recognized some of the children as living at Miller’s Dearborn Heights house, which is on Roosevelt Street near O.W. Best Middle School.

A woman who blinded a three month-old girl when she tried to stop her crying has been jailed for three years. Agnieszka Barcentewicz, 29, left the three-month-old infant with severe brain damage after shaking her four or five times, Snaresbrook Crown Court heard. The child, now two-and-a-half, is at a greater risk of sudden death in childhood and predicted to have a shorter life expectancy than average as a result of the incident on April 18, 2010.

Monsignor William Lynn was found guilty on Friday of one count of endangering the welfare of a child, making him the highest-ranking U.S. Roman Catholic official convicted in the church child sex abuse scandal. The jury acquitted Lynn, who oversaw hundreds of priests in the Philadelphia Archdiocese, on two other counts, conspiracy and another charge of child endangerment. The jury deliberated 13 days before reaching the mixed decision in the trial of Lynn, 61, who for 12 years served as secretary of the clergy. Lynn faces up to seven years in prison on the child endangerment conviction.

CHANDLER, Ariz. — A Valley karate instructor is accused of child molestation, and this isn’t the first time he’s been under investigation by police. Scott Alan Flood, 47, of Chandler, is currently being held at the Maricopa County Jail on two counts of child molestation.
