New Study Shows Media Under report Child Sexual Abuse, Miss Key Aspects of Issue

BERKELEY, CA — Tens of thousands of children are sexually abused each year in the United States, yet news coverage of the subject is out of sync with both the magnitude of the issue and the context in which it occurs. This finding comes from a study released this month from Berkeley Media Studies Group, a project of the Public Health Institute. The report, Case by Case: News coverage of child sexual abuse, examined national news stories on child sexual abuse published between 2007 and 2009. Fewer than one story a week focused on the topic and even fewer covered the issue in detail.

Since the police are hiding the truth about sexual crimes against children, someone has to come out and reveal the true story

When the nation’s top cop orders the 2010 Crime Statistics booklet be placed under the banner of Official Secrets Act, berefting the people details on the state of crime affecting women and children, what should the people make of it? The statistics are available in a booklet prepared by Bukit Aman’s Sexual Crimes Child Abuse Division. Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO), a non-governmental organisation, had three months ago requested for the information. The police responded saying they were unable to provide the details as the figures were classified as confidential documents.

Is Economy To Blame For Abuse?

Posted by Sandra On May - 23 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Is the economy behind our child abuse spike?

While causes of child abuse are hard to determine, many professionals who work with abused children say recent increases in child abuse are probably a result of the poor economy. Stress can increase the chance of domestic abuse of all kinds. And financial stress can push parents to the breaking point. The loss of a job, a home or other financial difficulties common to the now years-long recession makes the tough job of parenting even harder.

“Causes” of clerical child abuse in US revealed by new report

CATHOLIC PRIESTS WHO sexually molest children and teenagers are not driven by the pressures of celibacy or repressed homosexual desire, according to a  new inquiry into clerical abuses in the US. Instead, the report – commissioned by US bishops and other Catholic organizations – released today blames social changes, suggesting that abuse was driven by a general rise in “deviant” behavior in the 1960s and 1970s. Increases in drug use, premarital sex and divorce throughout society influenced “vulnerable” priests who became abusers, the document’s authors write.

Hundreds of children being accused of witchcraft ‘as belief in demonic possession spreads across the UK’

Hundreds of witchcraft abuse cases are going unreported across the country each year, it has been revealed. Officials believe child protection officers are only tipped off in the most extreme cases when a child’s life has been put in danger. Just 38 cases have been reported in the last five years – and it is feared that they represent just the tip of the iceberg.

SAN ANTONIO – It’s probably pretty safe to say most people hate being put on hold when they’re making a call. But when it involves reporting child abuse, being put on hold for long periods of time can be dangerous if the person just hangs up. News 4 WOAI Trouble Shooter Delaine Mathieu found some very important information about the state’s child abuse hotline and why no matter how long you wait — you should never hang up.

The stories are heartbreaking, all-too-common and shrouded in misconceptions. “Child sexual abuse is kind of a taboo subject,” said Celena Ditz, therapist and co-parenting coordinator. “People don’t want to talk about it.” Margie Christopher, executive director of Children’s Homes of Cleveland County, said it seems like every time she picks up the newspaper, there is another story about a child who has been sexually abused. More often than not, it was by a family member or someone trusted by the family.

“At-Risk Youth” Increasing

Over the past decade, more and more attention has been given to the issues associated with “at-risk youth” including youth crime, violence, sex, substance abuse, poor academic performance, etc. Research shows that at-risk youth struggle with complex issues and scenarios that are brought on by peers, mentors, family members, and difficult social environments. The increased complexity of today’s at-risk youth has forced parents and federal agencies to work together to find solutions. There has been growing interest in community-based efforts that help to educate and direct at-risk youth and families to a variety of helpful services.  This is evident by the recent support of at-risk youth programs or initiatives by federal agencies such as the OJJDP (Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention). The OJJDP has recently joined with other federal agencies to help bring about the SafeFutures initiative and the Children at Risk initiative.

Death of our children losing the power to shock

ANOTHER MONTH and another dead kiddie, another predictable murder scene and another predictable range of suspects. It will be no surprise if the person arrested over Serenity’s death turns out to fit the classic profile – young, Maori, male, most likely a beneficiary, well-known to police and other government agencies, and with a history of booze and drugs. Another refugee from Loserdom.

Massachusetts ranks No. 1 nationally for the highest rate of child abuse — mostly involving neglect — a ranking that officials say derives from the state’s strict reporting laws.  Massachusetts had the highest rate of child abuse of any state in federal fiscal 2009, the latest year for which statistics are available, as well as in 2007 and 2008. Also, Massachusetts ranked second among the 50 states in 2004 through 2006, according to a report from the U.S. Administration for Children and Families.
