Derek Cooper was just 2 years old when his father, Brandon Fraley, put his hands over the crying toddler’s mouth “until the child was silent,” according to a state file on the case. “The love and laughter that once surrounded our family has disappeared and in its place a heavy fog of despair has settled,” Jessica Wall, the boy’s mother, wrote in a victim impact statement when Fraley was sentenced to 10 years in prison. According to the social services case file on Derek, which the Lexington Herald-Leader obtained through a court order, there was a previous allegation of domestic violence by Fraley in 2006 that was unsubstantiated by social workers. A statue honoring Penn State football head coach Joe Paterno has been torn down as the university bows to massive public outcry. Penn State ordered the removal of the statue of Hall of Fame coach early on Sunday morning. Workers lifted the statue off its base and used a forklift to move it into Beaver Stadium early Saturday as the 100 to 150 students watching chanted, ‘We are Penn State.’  READ MORE HERE

Freeman Burton, 37, from Pleasanton, California, shot her 13-year-old daughter, Ainsley, and then shot herself on May 7th. According to NBC News, the Pleasanton Police Department concluded that the shooting was a murder-suicide.  READ MORE HERE

Pakistani police say they have arrested a man on accusation of burying his newborn daughter alive because she was physically deformed. Mohammed Anwar, who is a police officer in the city of Khanewal in the eastern Punjab province, says the child was born Thursday at a local hospital. READ MORE HERE

Man faces 50 years-to-life sentence for child abuse

HANFORD — Jurors found a Hanford man guilty on Friday of continuously sexually abusing his stepdaughter since she was 7 years old. Alfredo Provencio, 43, now faces a likely 50 years-to-life sentence when he returns to court on Aug. 17. DECATUR, Alabama — A Decatur woman was arrested Friday night for allegedly abusing her four-month-old child. Latonia Renea Stinnett, 22, of 4353 Old Moulton Road, is charged with one count of felony child abuse. She is being held in the Morgan County Jail on a $2,500 bond.  READ MORE HERE

SANTIAGO, Chile — Chile will investigate 61 schools in the country’s capital for possible child sex abuse, the attorney general said Friday in the latest government step to address a sharp rise in reports of such crimes. Attorney general Sabas Chahuan said his office will look at 49 schools in eastern Santiago and 12 on city’s west side. Skin red raw and peeling, two-year-old Adelle Tung was crying with pain when she was admitted to Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in May last year.  There were angry burns stretching from her lower back down to the backs of her knees. She had to be given morphine to ease her distress. Concerned doctors questioned Adelle’s mother, 25-year-old Natalie, to try to ascertain what might have caused her injuries — which looked to them like scalds from hot liquid. But Natalie could offer no explanation other than that Adelle’s wet nappy had split during the night, four days earlier, and had covered the sleeping toddler with crystals contained within the absorbent padding. This was dismissed by one medic, who, it is claimed, snapped: ‘If nappies were that dangerous, they wouldn’t sell them.’ READ MORE HERE

Michael E. Tringelof, 43, of Cincinnati, Ohio, is being charged for the kidnapping and torture of children between ages 5-10, which occurred between 1998 and 2002. A mother has been sentenced to life in prison with an additional 25 years on top after she was found guilty of the death of her six-year-old stepdaughter and the abuse of her stepson.
