Mother of Drowned Toddler Charged With Murder, Attempted Murder

SOUTH LOS ANGELES — A mother is in custody for allegedly trying to drown her two young children in South Los Angeles. It happened Wednesday morning in the 900 block of W. 50th Street. The Los Angeles Fire Department received a medical call around 7:30 a.m. The children, girls ages 1 and 5, were found in the bathroom of a small converted garage, LAPD Cmdr. A Utah woman who conspired to sell her then 13-year-old daughter’s virginity for $10,000 has been sentenced to prison. The woman, who is unnamed to protect her daughter’s identity, is set to serve anywhere from one to fifteen years in jail. Last year, she pleaded guilty to the second-degree felony of sexual exploitation of a minor, the Salt Lake Tribune reports. Her lawyer said in court that the woman was ‘taking (prescription pills) like candy’ when she tried to pawn her daughter’s virginity to a man known only as ‘Don.’  READ MORE HERE

Anthony Bush Accused Of Killing Donovan McKee In Knoxville

PITTSBURGH — A man who was watching his girlfriend’s son brutally beat the child to death because he hadn’t vacuumed their apartment in Pittsburgh’s Knoxville neighborhood, police said in a criminal complaint. Anthony Bush, 29, was arrested Sunday morning at the Rochelle Towers apartment building on Knox Avenue and arraigned on a charge of criminal homicide.Police said an investigation revealed that Bush was with Donovan McKee while the child’s mother was at work. They said Bush disciplined the child by beating him with various objects found in the apartment.  READ MORE HERE

Child abuse can cause lasting problems and even premature death for kids. Helpguide.org states that “Child abuse is more than bruises and broken bones. While physical abuse might be the most visible sign, other types of abuse, such as emotional abuse or child neglect, also leave deep, long lasting scars.” Yale School of Medicine researchers reported in a new study that in one year alone, over 4,500 children in the United States were hospitalized due to child abuse, and 300 of them died of their injuries. In a Yale news release by Karen N. Peart, “Children hospitalized at alarming rate due to abuse” it has been reported these researchers found that 4,569 children were hospitalized in the U.S. in 2006 due to serious abuse and 300 of these children died.  READ MORE HERE

While news of the recent death of a 3-year-old Barrow child touches the hearts of many, it is just one incident in a much larger picture, one that challenges communities across Alaska and puts the state in the top five states nationwide for number of children neglected and abused per capita. In 2010, the State of Alaska’s Office of Children’s Service received more than 4,500 allegations of child abuse impacting 2,871 children across the state that were later substantiated. Last month alone, 1,774 children were in placement in Alaska. It’s a problem that will only improve with the attention and dedication of all Alaskans, those working with the problem say. Austin, TX  – Gloria Ann Veloz, a 27-year-old Texas woman has been jailed after she allegedly photographed herself molesting two small children before sending the photos to her boyfriend. According to police, an investigation was launched after the Attorney General’s Office received a tip alleging that child pornography photographs had been posted on Veloz’s Facebook page.  READ MORE HERE

WANTED FOR: Unlawful Flight To Avoid Prosecution – Sexual Abuse First Degree (14 Counts), Sodomy First Degree (13 Counts), Rape First Degree (One Count), Bail Jumping (One Count)

Giusseppe Pino LoPorto was indicted on April 13, 1998 by a Baldwin County, Alabama Grand Jury for sexual abuse, sodomy, and rape, and a state warrant was issued for his arrest. The crimes that occurred from approximately 1985 through 1995 involved a juvenile. LoPorto was arrested in Alabama in 1996 and released on bond. He fled in 1998, shortly before his trial was scheduled to begin in Alabama. On April 15, 1998, a federal arrest warrant was issued by the United States District Court, Southern District of Alabama at Mobile, after LoPorto was charged federally with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

On June 29, 2010, LoPorto was located and arrested in Holland. While awaiting the extradition process, LoPorto was released by a Judge pending the completion of the formal extradition process. This is the second instance where LoPorto was located and arrested in European territory and released pending formal extradition. (Previously, LoPorto was located and arrested on August 2, 2005, by the Italian National Police of Belluno. He was released by the Court and allowed to check in every three days pending the extradition process). LoPorto’s whereabouts are unknown at this time.
