Panama City – A local man and woman, facing aggravated child abuse charges, are each being held in the Bay County jail on $250,000 bond. Panama City Police arrested the couple early yesterday morning, after a relative took their child to the hospital with 6 broken bones. Panama City Police arrested 21 year old Courtney Shaunte Lucille Hawkins and 25 year old Joseph Tyrell Duhon early Tuesday morning on a number of drug and weapons charges, but it was a child abuse investigation that initially brought authorities to their apartment.

One of Hawkins’ relative showed up at Bay Medical Center with Hawkins’ two year old daughter. The child had 6 broken bones. Department of Children and Families investigators say they’re not aware of any other abuse complaints involving this family, but this case is not rare.

PA CHILD ABUSE HOT LINE MISSED TOO MANY CALLS

It is outrageous and unacceptable that Pennsylvania has a child abuse hot line that routinely “misses” calls from people trying to report neglected, beaten or sexually abused children.Nearly 10 percent of callers to the statewide hot line last year failed to deliver their tips to officials who might have intervened and saved a life or a lifetime of psychological turmoil. Through November of this year, according to the state Department of Public Welfare, 10,805 calls to the phone number did not get through.

Medical personnel, police, and school officials appear to be learning about more incidents of violence against children and teens than they used to, but there is still substantial room for improvement in reporting, researchers said. Among some 2,650 youths in a telephone survey who reported exposure to violence in the previous year, 45.7% said the authorities knew about at least one of the violent incidents, according to David Finkelhor, PhD, of the University of New Hampshire in Durham, and colleagues. A similar survey conducted in 1992 indicated that only about 25% of violent incidents were reported to schools or police.

Man Sentenced To 10 Years For Beating Toddler To Death

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va – Can’t say I blame 21-year-old Jermaine Morgan for pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of 2-year-old Jordan Ferebee. He got 10 years in prison with 10 suspended. Had he went to trial, there was more than enough evidence to show that Morgan beat his friend’s little boy too death and a jury may have not been as lenient towards a man who beat a toddler hard enough to tear his liver.
