Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Shot in Arizona

Total of 18 people were shot/ 9-year old child killed

U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head during a public event in Tucson this morning.
The trauma director of the University of Arizona Medical Center, Dr. Peter Rhee, said Giffords is in critical condition following surgery and he was “very optimistic” about her recovery because she was able to “follow commands.” Rhee said a total of 10 patients were brought to the hospital. One, a nine-year-old girl, died. Five other patients were in critical condition. U.S. District Judge John Roll, the chief federal judge in Arizona, also was confirmed dead. Giffords was holding an event outside a Safeway grocery store when a man ran up and started shooting, witnnesses said.

MOBILE, Alabama – 5:00 p.m.–Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson has authorized capital murder charges against Heather Leavell-Keaton, the woman accused of torturing Natalie and Chase DeBlase. Until late this afternoon, Keaton was only charged with child abuse and abuse of a corpse. The children’s father, John DeBlase, was charged with murder last month.

The Italian Postal and Communications Police, supported by Europol, have uncovered a criminal group who install malicious software on businesses’ unprotected web servers to distribute shocking child sex abuse material online. The Italian Police were first alerted to the criminal activity when a grandmother, who had been innocently surfing the internet buying gifts for her grandchildren, clicked on a link to an online shop only to find herself redirected to a child abuse website. She immediately informed the police who, in early 2009, began routinely monitoring the activities of the illicit web pages which seemed to be hosted on an Italian web server.

EVIL gang leaders who drugged girls as young as 12 for sex were yesterday jailed for a total of 19 years. Abid Mohammed Saddique, 27, and Mohammed Romaan Liaqat, 28, carried out a “reign of terror” against 26 victims in Derby. The men befriended vulnerable girls aged 12-18, giving them booze and drugs before taking them to parties where they were handed around and raped.

TECUMSEH — Authorities say they think a 3-month-old girl died at the hands of her father. Steven Trammell, 33, of Tecumseh, is jailed in Pottawatomie County on complaints of child abuse. District Attorney Richard Smothermon said Friday he plans to file a first-degree murder charge against the man now that his daughter has died. Lydia Trammell died about 1 a.m. Friday at The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center, he said.

11-year-old girl claims classmate pulled knife, demanded oral sex

The boy is said to be in critical condition with life threatening injuries.

REDDING, Calif. — The father of an 8-year-old boy who police found bloodied and beaten with a baseball bat is under arrest on suspicion of attempted murder. Redding police say 53-year-old Geoffrey Kelly flew into a rage on Thursday morning and struck his son multiple times with an aluminum baseball bat.

LAKE FOREST, CA– A 36-year-old married woman is accused flying across the country to have sex with a 13-year-old boy she befriended while playing X-Box Live online. Rachel Ann Hicks was taken into custody Friday by Orange County sheriff’s investigators. Sheriff’s investigator say the woman initially “met” the boy in September in an X-Box live chat room, Orange County Sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino said.

RENOVO – A local man is jailed on $200,000 bail, charged with several sex crimes against two known juvenile males over the course of four years, according to state police at Lamar. Magisterial District Judge Frank P. Mills arraigned Jeffrey Alan Glossner, 47, of Fifth Street, on two separate incidents involving alleged sexual activity with minors. According to court papers, Renovo police officer Curt Marinon was called by a family member of one of the juveniles on Dec. 29, 2009.

The costs of child abuse to society are considerable. In 2008, Child Abuse America released the second comprehensive report on the direct (immediate intervention) and indirect (long-term) costs of child abuse and neglect in America. The report estimates that the United States spends $103.8 billion annually in response to child abuse (Wang and Holton, 2007).

The report analyzes information provided by the U.S. Census Bureau and the federal departments of Health and Human Services, Justice, and others. It estimates that the U.S. spends more than $33.1 billion annually on the direct effects of child abuse. The largest cost was for the child welfare system: $25.4 billion a year. Other direct costs included hospitalization/treatment of injuries ($6.6 billion), mental health care ($1.1 billion), and law enforcement interventions ($33.3 million).

Child abuse on the rise in Sullivan County

Sullivan County, Tenn. — The people who investigate child abuse claims in Sullivan County say the number of cases rose dramatically last year. The number of physical and sexual child abuse cases referred to the Sullivan County District Attorney’s office in 2010 was 929, according to a report compiled by the DA’s office. In 2009, that number was 715. “There is a problem and it’s probably greater than the average citizen understands,” said Assistant DA Barry Staubus. Staubus works with Children’s Advocacy Center Forensic Interviewer Amy Whitt-Bachman when prosecuting child abuse cases.
