Last month, we were so inspired by three volunteers from Pedal for Prevention (www.pedalforprevention.com). These young men biked through Colorado and more importantly through Fort Collins. They are riding their bikes across the country from South Carolina to California to raise money to end child sexual abuse. They will ride 4,300 miles in approximately 85 days to raise awareness and funds that help support programs like the Stewards of Children adult training and Talking About Touching student training that the Larimer County Child Advocacy Center provides in our community.

Jennifer Hawke-Petit, Haley, 17, and Michaela, 11

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Two Connecticut men charged with killing a woman and her two daughters in a 2007 house invasion inflicted unimaginable terror on a model family that had enjoyed their final pleasant summer day together, prosecutors told a jury during closing arguments Friday.

Prosecutor Gary Nicholson said it was impossible to recreate the fear the two girls, 11-year-old Michaela and 17-year-old Hayley Petit, felt when the men tied them to their beds and poured gasoline on or around them before setting their Cheshire house on fire.

Child Abuse On The Rise

Posted by Sandra On October - 2 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) – It’s a disturbing trend.  In Vanderburgh County, reports of child abuse and neglect went up by nearly 700 in just one year. Some of that may be because more people are speaking up.  There was the central call center that rolled out and that provides for a consistent statewide reporting of abuse and neglect, so we began to do a lot of community outreach.

But it’s not just reports.  Across the region, the number of court cases the Department of Children’s Services is dealing with has gone from about 880 to nearly 1200. Neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse have all increased.
