South Charleston Man Charged in Baby’s Death

South Charleston Police have charged a man in connection with the death of an 18-month old baby girl. Twenty-one year old Larry Hayes Junior is jailed on charges of child abuse resulting in death.  Police say the young Rebecca McDaniel was in his care when she was seriously injured last week.   The child’s mother is Hayes’ live-in girlfriend.  She was at work at the time the child was injured.

Police say the incident happened last Thursday.  According to a criminal complaint the mother, Meredith Bush said Hayes called her at work to say something was wrong with the child.  When he arrived with the baby, it wasn’t breathing.   The baby was taken to CAMC Women’s and Children’s hospital where it lived on a ventilator with no brain activity until she died Sunday.

Broadcasters use the Emergency Alert System (EAS) to air a description of the abducted child and suspected abductor. The goal of an AMBER Alert is to instantly galvanize the entire community to assist in the search for and safe recovery of the child.

CPS Investigations Ineffective

Posted by Sandra On October - 6 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Investigations by Child Protective Services (CPS) agencies following suspected episodes of child abuse were seldom followed by improvements in household risk factors for future abuse — casting doubt on the agencies’ effectiveness, researchers said.

Among 595 households followed in a longitudinal study of risk factors for child abuse, those subjected to CPS investigations showed few major differences afterward in abuse risks that existed before the inspection, compared with households that had not been assessed, according to Kristine A. Campbell, MD, MSc, of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, and colleagues.

Man Who Ate Out His Son’s Eyeball Pleads Not Guilty By Reason Of Insanity

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Here’s another update on a story we featured last year — a horrific case of child abuse that stuck with me for awhile. Back in April of ’09, 34-year-old Angelo Mendoza, allegedly high on PCP, attacked his 4-year-old son and chewed out one of his eyeballs. The other one he mutilated. When Wheelchair bound, he made his way to a neighbor’s home and crawled into the back yard, stripped naked and began hacking off his own leg with a pickax while yelling incoherently. Ramon Rodriguez wrestled the ax away from him and then went to check on the man’s son. He found him laying on the ground with bites to his hands and both eyes swollen shut. “My daddy ate my eyes out,” the little boy told him.

Arrest

MERIDIAN —     Eight Lauderdale County deputies and investigators sat around a living room with walls that were lined with photos of young children, family portraits and school pictures. They were in this home because a man suspected of being a sexual predator was on his way there to meet a teenaged boy.

At about 8:50 p.m. Saturday, deputies arrested John Weatherford III, 29, of Meridian. On the ground next to Weatherford’s open car door and where he was sitting handcuffed was a paper bag containing a hamburger and a soft drink he had bought for the teenager. Three LCSD deputies stood over him, one armed with an assault rifle, while an investigator read him his rights.
