A man who has a history of battery arrests has been charged with the murder of a 17-month-old South Side baby boy who died of multiple blunt force trauma early Saturday in the South Shore neighborhood.

The suspect has also been charged with abusing the boy’s 3-year-old brother.

Houston nurse Abigail Young went on trial today on charges she failed to prevent the death of her 4-year-old daughter whose body was battered with 80 bruises, had a severed pancreas and a fractured skull.

There were also indications that the girl had been sexually abused.

Young, 34, faces up to life in prison if convicted on the one count of injury to a child by omission. Jury selection began today in Young’s unusual case.

Kids Dying at Record Pace in Hot Cars

WASHINGTON — Deaths of infants and toddlers trapped inside hot automobiles have mounted in recent weeks, prompting warnings from the government and safety groups at the start of summer.

A researcher says 18 children have died of hyperthermia since the beginning of this year, eight of them reported since June 13.

BIG SPRINGS, Neb. — A truck driver has been charged with abducting an 8-year-old California girl from a travel center in western Nebraska.

The State Patrol says 45-year-old William J. Buckner, of Clifton Springs, N.Y., was booked into the Garden County jail Thursday on charges of kidnapping, sexual assault and transporting a minor across state lines.

GREENVILLE, Pa. –  Michael Rabold, 24, and Royanne Darr, 22, have been charged with the death of their 2-month-old son. On the night of his death, Isaac was having problems breathing. Heeding the advice of his mother, Rabold took Isaac outside where the temperature was in the 30s.

A Cowlitz County judge ruled Thursday that a former Longview man convicted of raping a 13-year-old girl can have contact with his daughter after the state Court of Appeals demanded clarification on the matter earlier this year.

The Washington State Court of Appeals said in January that the Cowlitz County Prosecutor’s office had not established whether Chad Anthony Lehman, who pleaded guilty to second-degree rape of a child in 2003, poses a danger to his daughter, who now is around 11 years old.

From Kiddie Condoms to Anti-Rape Condoms More People Are Against Them Than For Them

Condoms are meant to protect you. But instead they’re creating quite the controversy. From being handed out to elementary school students to an anti-rape one being handed out at The World Cup.

Starting with the elementary school debate. A Massachusetts school district is going ahead with plans to hand out condoms to students without their parents consent or even being made aware that their child asked for one. The Provincetown School District voted unanimously, earlier this month, for a sex education policy allowing all children, as young as first grade, to talk to a counselor and get condoms without parental permission.

But this week, Governor Deval Patrick got involved, saying that sex education programs should be “age appropriate” and that “parents ought to be involved”.

ADA, Okla. (AP) — A 39-year-old Allen man has received a 150-year prison term for sexually molesting a child.

A Pontotoc County convicted Lawrence Stewart June 2 on charges including rape and child molestation. The panel recommended 25 years each on two counts of lewd molestation; 25 years for first-degree rape by instrumentation; 20 years for forcible oral sodomy; 30 years for sexual abuse of a child and 25 years for first-degree rape.

SANTA ANA – The boyfriend of a mother accused of abusing her 2-year-old and 5-year-old sons has also been arrested in connection with participating in the abuse, police said Friday.

Mario Alberto Colin, 31, of Santa Ana, was arrested at 2:30 a.m. Friday at the Santa Ana apartment he shares with his wife and two young children, said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

DENVER — The mother of a 3-year-old girl whose body was found in a trash bag dumped in a ravine pleaded guilty Friday to child abuse and has agreed to testify against her former boyfriend.Miriam Gallegos made her admission in the 2007 death of Neveah Gallegos.The mother had initially claimed her daughter had been kidnapped. However, when questioned about it, she broke down and admitted to police that her 3-year-old was dead and stuffed in two plastic bags, according to arrest affidavits.
