Stepfather Guilty In Child’s Death
A Bernalillo County jury found Stephen Casaus guilty of child abuse with reckless disregard resulting in the death of his 9-year-old stepson Friday. The jury reconvened Friday morning to determine a verdict in the 2013 beating death of Omaree Varela. The reckless disregard count of child abuse means Casaus did not call for help or try to save Omaree’s life when the boy was allegedly kicked to death by his mother.
