Later that evening, his parents would find his truck abandoned at a strip mall and police would take in a classmate, 19-year-old Hermilo Moralez, loitering near the area and acting suspicious. A massive search began on Wednesday morning, searchers later being directed to a field by Moralez,  where they would find Wilkerson’s partially burned body. Moralez confessed to the killing, telling them he and Wilkerson, whom he had known for five years, got into a fight after Wilkerson allegedly made sexual advances towards him. The fight ended with Moralez beating the teen to death with a wooden rod.
