Controversial Wisconsin GOP Bill States: Single-Parenthood Contributes To Child Abuse

The Wisconsin state Senate Committee on Public Health, Human Services and Revenue will hold a hearing today on a bill authored by state Sen. Glenn Grothman (R) that would force the sate to say that “nonmarital parenthood” contributes to child abuse and neglect, and distribute official literature saying as much. His legislationwould add the bolded portions to Wisconsin state law:

My wife and I have 4 adopted daughters that are now grown. They all came from different abusive situations and are now productive beautiful citizens. One of my girls has even adopted. She and her husband have a son they adopted through DHS. For someone who has never gone through adoption to decide that a single parent contributes to child abuse is just ridiculous. There are many many single parents who are raising children as are divorced parents. Its so sad that this body of legislators decide to do this instead of helping see that more children get adopted even if its to single parents.
