Child Abuse Victims More Likely to Suffer From Chronic Illnesses
A new study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry suggests that those children who develop mental problems due to abuse or other such experiences are more likely to suffer from chronic illnesses later on in their lives. Researchers from the University of Otago in New Zealand analyzed data from World Health Organization World Mental Health Surveys which included people from 10 different countries. The researchers checked into mental disorders such as anxiety and depression and also childhood difficulties such as abuse, loss of parent etc.
By the time you finish reading this, 15 children will have been abused; In the next five minutes, 30 more; Within the next hour, 360 more; And by tonight, close to 8,000+ children will have suffered from abuse, 5 of which will die. Child abuse has increased 134% since 1980 and is now considered a worldwide epidemic. The high jump in child abuse deaths and the shocking increase in statistics highlights the frightening lack of public knowledge.
