The role of bullying in suicide among our young people has been intensely scrutinized in both media and research. As the deleterious impacts on mental and physical health for both perpetrators and targets—suicide being the most severe—become more evident, calls for framing of the problem from a public health framework have increased. A scientifically grounded educational and public health approach to both bullying and suicide prevention is required.

Okaloosa County, Florida -The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office today arrested two Walton County residents in connection with an investigation into the abuse and neglect of a three year old developmentally disabled child who is unable to walk or verbally communicate. 31-year old Andrew Dwyer in Miramar Beach is charged with two counts of child abuse. His girlfriend, 28-year old Crimson Waters is charged with two counts of child neglect.

One of the most destructive problems affecting children in “Indian country” today is sexual abuse. Increasing reports of child sexual abuse and the severe impact this type of crime has on Indian youth and their families have prompted tribal leaders to voice great concern about the impact of this crime on Indian communities. Congress, acting in response to concerns expressed by tribal leaders and pursuant to its responsibility as guardian and trustee for Indian tribes, has enacted new laws in the past fifteen years to address child sexual abuse in Indian country. But federal legislative efforts cannot hope to defeat child sexual abuse in Indian country. Tribes must play an integral part of a successful solution.

An Alabama couple who appeared on the “Maury” TV show last year now faces charges surrounding the alleged sexual abuse of a 5-year-old girl. David Anthony Williams, 21, was arrested on Oct. 3 and accused of first-degree rape and sodomy involving the daughter of Brittany Day. Williams allegedly attacked the young girl in June.

Police in Winnipeg, Canada say that the bodies of several infants were found in a U-Haul storage locker on Monday night. CBC News first reported the “gruesome scene,” where six bodies were discovered in various states of decomposition. An employee at the facility originally called police after the remains caught his or her attention. It wasn’t immediately clear how long the bodies had been in the locker, but police told reporters that a woman who was renting the locker has been interviewed.

A former basketball coach and gym teacher at a prestigious New York City high school faces statutory rape charges for her alleged sex abuse of a male student. Megan Mahoney, 24, was arrested Monday for allegedly having regular sexual contact with the same 16-year-old student over a period of more than two months beginning in late October 2013, the Staten Island Advance reports.

ST. PAUL, Minnesota – A 45-year-old St. Paul man has been charged with two counts of malicious punishment of a child after a local doctor notified police that a 3-month-old boy in the ER appeared to be a victim of “classic child abuse.” The criminal complaint filed in Ramsey County late last week states that John Eric Autey brought his son to the emergency room the evening of April 23 and said the child had been vomiting since the day before. The doctor who examined the boy found extensive bruising on his chest wall that looked like fingers, fractured ribs, and a non-life-threatening hemorrhage in the boy’s brain. When asked what happened, Autey said the boy fell from a bed.

A stay-at-home dad in Florida who shot dead two of his children and wounded a third before killing himself was in the midst of a nasty divorce from his wife and had asked a judge for a protective order claiming she was the violent one. David Mohney claimed his wife Cynthia was a violent, abusive alcoholic in court papers filed just two months before he gunned down his children Friday in their quiet, middle-class neighborhood just south of Daytona Beach. He wanted to leave his wife and take the family back to his hometown in South Dakota, police say.

Seven-year-old Haily was excited to go to a Halloween party at the Magic Kingdom on October 5th. It was her first trip to Walt Disney World. She dressed up as a peacock, and used “Fright Night” eye-shadow tattoos that her family purchased at the Walmart in Harborcreek. Fourty-eight hours after the party her eyes were red, swollen, and raw.

Human remains were found Saturday on an abandoned property during the search for University of Virginia student Hannah Graham, who has been missing for more than a month, authorities said. The remains were found around noon near Old Lynchburg Road in Albemarle County, said Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo. The area is less than 10 miles from where Graham, 18, was last seen. Longo said he “made a very difficult phone call” to Graham’s parents to share the discovery with them, but forensic tests need to be conducted to determine the identity of the remains.

Jorge Alberto Martinez, Jr. is wanted in Sacramento County, California, for allegedly engaging in multiple sex acts with a 13-year-old girl. Martinez was arrested for this crime and was found to be in possession of illicit photographs of the victim and a loaded handgun. Prior to his trial, Martinez fled Sacramento County. In August of 2006, he was charged in the Superior Court of California, County of Sacramento, with lewd and lascivious act with a child under 14 years of age, oral copulation with a child under 14 years of age, photographing a minor during a sex act, and possession of a concealed firearm. On July 11, 2007, Martinez was charged in the United States District Court, Eastern District of California, Sacramento, California, with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Yangzhou Jiangdu county 7-year-old girl Wang Yanwen went missing after attending a relative’s wedding in Taizhou city Jiangyan district Huagang town on October 3rd. On the evening of the 6th, Taizhou police announced to the public that they’ve found the body of the missing girl Wang Yanwen on a riverbank in Jiangyan district Huagang town, confirming that she had been killed.

CONWAY – A Beaver County woman is facing charges after allegedly pulling her 6-year-old daughter’s hair so hard that she caused internal bleeding. According to police, Brittany Ruck, 25, of Conway, is charged in the Aug. 31 incident. The criminal complaint states the girl’s scalp was separated from her skull as a result of Ruck pulling on her hair. “The head injury was described in medical terms as traction,” said Michael Priolo, of the Conway Police Department. “It is a separation between the scalp and skull which creates a void that fills with blood. The blood ended up pulling around the eyes, giving her raccoon eyes.”
