A Gwent Police officer who was part of a British paedophile ring which swapped images of child abuse has been jailed for a year at Newport Crown Court.

Det Con Michael Thomas, a 40-year-old married father-of-two, was convicted of distributing, making and possessing indecent images earlier this month.

He said Friday that he’s been preparing for years for the day that his special-needs son would die. But the circumstances behind Gerren Isgrigg’s death, the arrest of Gerren’s grandmother and the outpouring of concern about the boy have been overwhelming, he said.

FITCHBURG, Wis. — A Fitchburg day care provider accused of abusing children was released from jail on a signature bond Thursday as police and prosecutors said they continued to compile evidence.

Neighbors who know Michelle Christensen, 40, said they were in disbelief and were wondering if it was just a misunderstanding.Neighbors on Osmundsen Street in Fitchburg said they were stunned to learn Christensen, owner of an in-home day care, is suspected of abusing four infants in her care.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY (WTVD) — Social workers in Cumberland County are scrambling to get a handle on a spike in reported child abuse cases.

Last month, the number of reported cases jumped 46 percent. There were 427 reported cases of child abuse in Cumberland County involving more than 800 children.

Police have arrested a 26-year-old Gillette man who they say physically abused a 4-year-old girl.

Thomas John Thelen is expected to be charged with felony child abuse.

He was arrested Wednesday night after his girlfriend’s daughter was flown by air ambulance to Denver. The girl, whose name was not released, has bleeding on her brain.

A Bacchus Elementary School teacher’s aide was charged Thursday with child abuse for allegedly hitting an autistic student.

According to charging documents filed in 3rd District Court, two students witnessed the woman hit the 12-year-old boy on the shoulder and hit him on the back of the head causing him to fall over.

Midland County, TX- On Monday, Midland County deputies were alerted by CPS after a woman showed up at their office with a cell phone video of her roommate, 29-year old Kristi Michelle Kaulaity.

The woman, a 33-year old female, told deputies Kaulaity was intoxicated around 2:30 a.m. last Friday and became impatient with her 1-year old son. The woman said she started video taping Kaulaity with her cell phone because she was concerned for the child. The video showed Kaulaity pushing her son away from her several times before she put him on the couch, grabbed a pillow and covered his face with it while he cried.

85% to 90% of the 876,213 persons reported missing to America’s law enforcement agencies in 2000 were juveniles (persons under 18 years of age). That means that 2,100 times per day parents or primary care givers felt the disappearance was serious enough to call law enforcement.

Annually, more than 3.5 million children are reported to child protective services agencies as victims of child abuse and neglect. Mirroring the nation, the number of reports of child abuse and neglect in North Carolina continues to rise, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services. In fiscal year 2009, the state had 67,397 reports of abuse or neglect, up from 58,815 in fiscal year 1998.

The number of reported child abuse and neglect cases in Mecklenburg County rose 22 percent between 2004 and 2009, according to a study released Wednesday.

Researchers found there were 12,232 reports of abuse or neglect between July 1, 2008, and June 30, 2009 – about 2,200 more than during the same time span from 2004 to 2005.
