America Has an Incest Problem

February - 24 - 2013 Reporter: Sandra Respond

Last year offered plenty of moments to have a sustained national conversation about child sexual abuse: the Jerry Sandusky verdict, the BBC’s Jimmy Savile, Horace Mann’s faculty members, and a slew of slightly less publicized incidents. President Obama missed the opportunity to put this issue on his second-term agenda in his inaugural speech. Child sexual abuse impacts more Americans annually than cancer, AIDS, gun violence, LGBT inequality, and the mortgage crisis combined—subjects that Obama did cover.

Detectives found more photos and videos of Levy’s patients in his home, though parents may never get the answers they wanted.

Academics and practitioners often disagree over definitions of childhood trauma, and about how common it is. Nevertheless there is general agreement that childhood trauma is caused by abuse that falls into three categories. These are: emotional abuse; physical abuse; and sexual abuse. Although sexual abuse has traditionally been considered the most damaging, recent research shows that all three types of abuse can have serious consequences and result in difficulties for the subject which may continue into, or arise in, adulthood.

Amelia Dyer: The Woman Who Viciously Murdered 300 Babies

February - 24 - 2013 Reporter: Sandra Respond

Harold Shipman is generally considered to be Britain’s worst serial killer, with more than 250 murders ascribed to his name. But hidden among the tales of habitual drunks, petty thieves and small-time fraudsters published online last week sits the file of a little-known Bristol-born woman who may well have killed more. While largely forgotten today, Amelia Dyer’s crimes paved the way for one of the most sensational trials of the Victorian era – and spotlighted the pandemic problem of infanticide in 19th century Britain. Her Prison Commission file, now visible online, logs Dyer’s final moments on the scaffold at Newgate Gaol on June 10, 1896, and records her hanging with characteristic Victorian efficiency: “On account of her weight and the softness of the textures, rather a short drop was given. It proved to be quite sufficient.”
