October - 18 - 2013 Reporter: Sandra Respond

A security guard at the Victoria’s Secret in New York City’s Herald Square uncovered a dead fetus in the bag of a teenage customer Thursday afternoon, authorities said. According to the Daily News, security personnel stopped two teenage girls at the midtown store to question them about shoplifting when the deceased baby was found. “It was discovered that one of the females had what we believe to be a fetus [in her bag],” Sgt. Lee Jones of the New York Police Department told Business Insider.

October - 18 - 2013 Reporter: Sandra Respond

COLVILLE, WA — An 11-year-old boy was convicted Friday of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in a fifth-grade plot that targeted a female classmate. Stevens County Superior Court Judge Allen Nielsen said Friday that “simple anger” fueled the plot the boy hatched earlier this year with a 10-year-old classmate at Fort Colville Elementary school in northeast Washington. School staff seized a handgun and knife the boys brought to school Feb. 7.

October - 18 - 2013 Reporter: Sandra Respond

JACKSONVILLE, Ark. — Authorities say a man armed with a knife forced his way onto a school bus as it picked up children in central Arkansas, then drove it several miles during a police pursuit. Police say 11 children and the driver were aboard when 22-year-old Nicholas John Miller got onto the bus Thursday morning in Jacksonville, a Little Rock suburb. Jacksonville police spokeswoman April Kiser says Miller was armed with a knife and pulled over only after seeing police spike strips on the road.

October - 18 - 2013 Reporter: Sandra Respond

CAPE CORAL, FL – Investigators from several places around the world say former Cape Coral attorney Rex Powell was the leader of a ring which had a chat room called BoyLover.net which had 70,000 members until it was shut down. The investigation started five years ago but until they arrested all 184 men the court documents were sealed, until Friday. “He’s a man I knew! A lawyer in this city, in this town,” says Stuart Pepper, who himself is an attorney in Cape Coral.

Outrage As Charges Dropped Against Child Killers

October - 18 - 2013 Reporter: Sandra Respond

A Maricopa County judge dismissed murder and child-abuse charges against a couple indicted in the death of a 2-year-old girl left in their care after prosecutors failed to produce crucial forensic reports related to the fatality. The dismissal left prosecutors a chance to refile the charges at a later date, and the victim’s family is confident that they will. Savannah Cross died in December after she was taken to the hospital with bruises from head to toe. The 2-year-old girl was living with baby-sitters Ryan Alan Reed, 27, and Allison Ann Clement, 28, who were arrested hours later.

Orphan Pleads to be Adopted

October - 16 - 2013 Reporter: Sandra Respond

ST. PETERSBURG — As soon as they pulled into the church lot, Davion changed his mind. ”Miss! Hey, Miss!” he called to his caseworker, who was driving. “I don’t want to do this anymore.” In the back seat, he hugged the Bible someone had given him at the foster home. “You’re going to be great,” Connie Going said. Outside St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, she straightened his tie. Like his too-big black suit, the white tie had been donated. It zipped up around the neck, which helped. No one had ever taught Davion, 15, how to tie one.

Lawmakers Seek Castration for Child Molesters

October - 16 - 2013 Reporter: Sandra Respond

A member of the Alabama state legislature is re-introducing a bill that would legalize surgical castration as a punishment for child molesters, and foot them with the bill for the procedure. The Florence Times Daily reported on Sunday that state Rep. Steve Hurst’s (R) proposal would require convicted sex offenders over the age of 21 to be castrated before being released from prison if their victims were 12 years old or younger at the time the crime was committed. The prisoner would also be required to pay for the procedure.

Shocking Facebook Post Leads to Teen’s Arrest

October - 16 - 2013 Reporter: Sandra Respond

LAKELAND, FL — Polk County deputies have arrested and charged two girls with felony aggravated stalking after last month’s suicide of Rebecca Sedwick. One of the girls allegedly told Rebecca to “drink bleach and die.” Deputies say the arrests were prompted by a weekend Facebook post. In a press conference Tuesday morning, Sheriff Grady Judd cited a post from the 14-year-old girl that said, in summary, that she knows her bullying led to Sedwick’s suicide, and she didn’t care. That post was “liked” by more than 30 people. The sheriff’s office charged that 14-year-old and Sedwick’s former best friend, who is 12.

Cheerleader Rape Ignites Outrage

October - 16 - 2013 Reporter: Sandra Respond

Missouri officials are facing a firestorm of criticism and social media attacks over renewed interest in a 2012 case in which prosecutors dropped sexual assault charges against a prominent high school football player arrested for allegedly raping a drunken 14-year-old cheerleader and having it recorded on video. Felony charges were also dropped against another 17-year-old senior in Maryville, Mo., who used a friend’s iPhone to record a video clip of the grandson of Rex Barnett, a powerful former Republican state representative, having sex with the girl.

Mom Who Drowned Her Children May Collect On Their Estate

October - 16 - 2013 Reporter: Sandra Respond

MINEOLA, N.Y. — It’s the hallmark of New York’s Son of Sam law and others like it across the nation — convicted criminals should not be able to profit from their crimes. But legal experts say the case of a Long Island mother who drowned her three children in a bathtub and is now seeking to cash in could succeed because of a loophole. Since Leatrice Brewer was never convicted — instead found not guilty by reason of mental disease — legal experts say she could make a plausible case to receive some of her children’s $350,000 estate.

Baby Hope’s Killer Arrested

October - 14 - 2013 Reporter: Sandra Respond

The NYPD cracked the murder case of ‘Baby Hope’ after 22-years when an anonymous tipster who overheard a conversation in a laundromat led police to the sister of the four-year-old girl – and eventually, Conrado Juarez, who has confessed to killing the child. Following a media blitz over the summer as the NYPD marked the 22nd anniversary of her death, a Manhattan mom phoned police to say that two years ago she listened in as a lady said her little sister had died and may have been killed.

Teen “Sexting” Photos Ending Up On Pedophile Websites

October - 14 - 2013 Reporter: Sandra Respond

Tens of thousands of explicit self-portraits taken by teenagers are ending up on websites viewed by pedophiles. The naked or sexual pictures are often taken by girls at the request of boys in their classes and sent by mobile phone, in a practice known as ‘sexting’. But unbeknownst to the girls, these photographs may end up being passed around the school and even shared on social networking sites such as Facebook – then stolen and published on websites used by pedophiles. An earlier investigation found boys and girls as young as 13 are routinely swapping naked self-portraits.
