LAFAYETTE — A former Opelousas child psychiatrist was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison Friday on child pornography charges that arose after his release from serving an earlier 10-year sentence in a separate pornography case. Gary Jefferson Byrd, 72, of Opelousas, also faced state sexual battery charges in the 1980s in St. Landry Parish for allegedly molesting two boys in his care, but those charges were dropped in an agreement that called on Byrd never to see children as clients again if he regained his medical license. Prosecutors at the time said the deal was made because of the difficulty in finding evidence to corroborate accusations from the children.

News sources in Florida are reporting that the Port Canaveral Police Department arrested a 36 year old Disney crew member today on charges of molesting a 13 year old girl on the Disney Dream cruise ship. Florida Today states that “the Port Canaveral Police Department has arrested a Disney Cruise Line crew member today for alleged lewd or lascivious molestation of a minor.”

The serial molester who has been targeting children is at work again. On Monday afternoon, he assaulted his eighth victim, a 13-year old, while she was on her way home from school in Sion. The accused, with the distinguishing feature of a damaged eye — it is completely white — has been in operation for six months now, but is still at large. The police’s efforts to track him down seem to be limp at best, even as parents are terrified for their school-going children.

SIOUX CITY | After telling a judge the pain and chaos that Daniel Harbeck, the man who had repeatedly molested her daughter for more than three years, had caused her family, the victim’s mother ended her statement with what she considered an appropriate sentence. “I believe Dan should spend the rest of his life in prison for his horrible crimes. He needs to be held accountable for his actions,” the mother said Thursday in Woodbury County District Court.

Memphis – In 2011, James Hawkins Jr. was convicted of brutally killing his girlfriend and mother of his children, Charlene Gaither, and making one daughter help dispose of the body. It was during that murder trial allegations of several child rapes against James Hawkins Sr. were made and charges were filed. Today, Hawkins Sr., was convicted of two counts of raping two young female relatives.

An Alabama pastor has been arrested on sex abuse charges for allegedly raping and sodomizing a young family member. Sheriff Harris Huffman said William Best Jr. was charged with rape, sodomy and incest and was being held in the county jail, with his bond raised to $2million Thursday by a Selma judge. Best, 47, server as a pastor of Living Waters Church in Valley Grande. District Attorney Michael Jackson says the minister is accused of beginning a sexual relationship with a minor who was 14 and continuing it for three years.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has arrested a lieutenant for the Knox County Sheriff’s Office in connection to a rape investigation. On Tuesday afternoon, a Knox County Grand Jury indicted Dennis Mills, Jr., on a set of criminal counts, including rape of a child, statutory rape by an authority figure, and incest. Authorities arrested him without incident in Knoxville this Tuesday evening.

A woman from Nashville who allowed her young daughter to be beaten to death has pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and aggravated child neglect after she failed to protect the toddler. Neena Costanza, 22, accepted a plea deal to serve 30 percent of a 20-year sentence — with a chance for parole that means she could be free within six years. Little Eloise Costanza was just 17-months-old when she died after being beaten up by her boyfriend Jacob Scott Hughes, 23, who is already in jail and awaiting trial for the toddlers’ murder.
