FOUR VICTIMS of child abuse have seen the man responsible jailed more than 40 years after he committed the offences. John Hall was just 12 when he indecently assaulted his victims, who were all under the age of 11 at the time. Now 57, Hall was jailed for three-and-a-half-years after his victims contacted police last year.

Advocates for survivors of child abuse in North Dakota are asking them to “come out” by writing something from the heart — about the abuse, how they’ve dealt with it or anything they’d like to say about their lives — for a publication to be called “Authentic Voices.” One of the pieces received so far, a poem titled “My Name,” includes the line, “No longer will I wear the name of fear upon my eyes,” and one of the images chosen to illustrate the public awareness campaign is a partial profile of a bright-eyed child.

I’ve had a gutsful! A few weeks back we had three child abuse cases that hit the headlines in as many days. Babies bashed, shaken, hurt and all at the hands of those who should be caring for them. To me they all sounded the same, just another beaten baby. I found myself looking for a point of difference in the cases so they may make the 6 o’clock news. Only one did. The story of baby Serenity, a six month old Ngaruawahia baby who died from traumatic brain injury.

Melissa Anderson’s worst childhood memory is shepherding her siblings into the closet while they sang loudly to drown out the sounds of her father beating her younger brother. Her father, Richard Jay Swank, pulled Anderson out of school in the fifth grade and made her the primary caretaker of nine brothers and sisters. Most endured beatings, torture and starvation.
Las Vegas, NV — A local family featured on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is under scrutiny after questions are raised about their little girls’ medical condition. The Cerda family was featured heavily on Action News when they were selected by the show for a new home in March, 2009. Thousands in the community donated their time, and money, to make the Cerda dream home a reality. Allegations this spring, first reported by the Oregonian newspaper in Clackamas County, show the mother may have misrepresented just how bad the girls health was.

The mother of a British toddler who disappeared on a family vacation in Portugal has written a memoir about the fruitless search for her child in order to pay for the ongoing investigation. The 10-year-old girl who video-recorded her rapist using a mobile phone as he coerced her into a sexual act about two years ago can best be described as empowerment at its best.
Rape on minors has always posed a headache for the justice delivery system because vital evidence is sometimes lost as children tend to forget what exactly would have transpired. The sad reality, however, is that young girls have been infected with HIV through rape and this has created a serious problem in families as they try to come to terms with such cases.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Male caregivers are responsible for two-thirds of child deaths and near-fatal injuries in Minnesota, according to a new study. The Child Mortality Review Board carried out the state-mandated study by researching more than 200 preventable deaths of Minnesota children between 2005 and 2009. In most of them, the children were being cared for by unemployed fathers, stepfathers or boyfriends of the mothers. Half of the incidents involved children less than 1 year old.

DENVER — Although more than two decades have passed, 26-year-old Rezal Martinez clearly recalls the extreme emotional toll sexual abuse took on her as a child.”From about the ages of 3 to 5, I was sexually assaulted by my father, and my whole life changed,” Martinez said. “It was so bad at age 5, I actually tried committing suicide.
