Nubia Barahona, 10, was found dead on Valentine's Day, wrapped in plastic in the back of her adoptive father's pest control truck in Palm Beach County.

MIAMI — Miami-Dade County has named a street after a 10-year-girl who died after chronic child abuse and launched a new poster to make people aware of an abuse hotline. Officials on Friday renamed a portion of a street “Nubia Way” after Nubia Barahona. Her decomposing body was found in her father’s truck along Interstate 95 in February. Her twin brother Victor was badly burned by a toxic chemical.

Cody Alan Legebokoff, 21, of Prince George, has been charged with three counts of first degree murder in connection with the deaths of Jill Stacey Stuchenko, 35, Cynthia Frances Maas, 35, and Natasha Lynn Montgomery, 23. Legebokoff was arrested this past Friday at the Prince George Regional Correctional Center where he is currently awaiting trial in the November 2010 homicide of 15 year old Loren Donn Leslie from Fraser Lake, B.C.

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — The arrest of an accused serial killer in northern B.C. is a “big deal” for sex workers, says the head of a Prince George organization. Jan Wilson, who works with women in the sex trade as the co-ordinator of the Prince George New Hope Society, said they will feel safer now that charges have been laid in the murders of Jill Stacey Stuchenko and Cynthia Frances Maas. Both 35-year-old mothers had worked as prostitutes in Prince George.

Woman’s Abuse Started Decades Ago

Posted by Sandra On October - 8 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Lisa Hawkins’ abuse began decades before her boyfriend dangled her, head down, from the ninth floor balcony of a Myrtle Beach hotel. “You want out of this room so bad,” he growled at her, his large hands wrapped around her ankles. “You’re out of it now. What do you think of this?” Hawkins struggled, trying to free her legs and plummet.

Daniel Mendez was a Boy Scout, had plenty of friends, earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, played football and was consistently an honor student. But that didn’t stop bullies from going after him, calling him names such as half-breed, gay and mercilessly ridiculing him at Bernice Ayer Middle School in San Clemente.

As we kick off Domestic Violence Awareness Month, let me introduce you to an unlikely victim. Dan Huddleston, a 60-year-old retired air traffic controller, is not your poster child survivor. Yet the Sugar Grove man — husband, father of two, grandfather of six — represents millions of adults out there who for a lifetime have carried scars from dark childhood memories.

Texas–Child Wins Protection From CPS State Child Welfare Agency

Posted by Sandra On September - 30 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

A Texas court is sending an urgent message to child protective services agencies across the country: Stop harming children in the name of “protecting” them, according to a national child advocacy organization. The National Coalition for Child Protection Reform responded Thursday to a decision by a court in Texas ordering the Texas Child Protective Services agency to stay away from a 14-year-old girl. Such “orders of protection” are common in domestic violence cases.  “But we’ve never heard of such an order protecting a child from a child welfare agency – until now,” said NCCPR Executive Director Richard Wexler.

Girls looking at a computer screen

How would you feel if your 13-year-old discovered a Facebook page called ‘you know she’s playing hard to get when you’re chasing her down an alley‘? Thousands of Facebook users have signed a petition against this page and others like it, horrified by the way they condone rape and violence against women. This particular page has attracted a lot of attention with over 190,000 likes and an ugly mass of derogatory comments and seeming confessions of rape such as ‘I have raped many women… no lie,’ and ‘It’s not rape, it’s surprise sex.’

Michelle Rodriguez Helps to Punish Child Abusers

After inappropriate images were found on Wesley Wayne Schaefer’s computer, it initially seemed that child pornography would be the only charge the 34-year-old San Marcos man would face in trial. But investigators probed further and asked six children who once lived with Schaefer to be interviewed at Roxanne’s House, a children’s advocacy program that is part of the Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center.

Princess Olufemi-Kayode

Her name is Princess Olufemi-Kayode. She is a columnist, a journalist and communication development expert. She is one of the few Nigerian women who have not allowed stigma keep them mourning after sexual abuse. As a teenager, she was sexually abused. Despite her open admission of being a victim of rape, she is happily married, with children. Olufemi-Kayode’s experience made her realise the impact of the consequences of rape on victims. This led to her raising public awareness and seeking institutional support to meet the needs of abused children.

CNN’s Don Lemon’s Memoir Reveals Childhood Sex Abuse

Posted by Sandra On September - 24 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

CNN’s Don Lemon released his memoir “Transparent” in May. His story includes incidences of pedophilia victimization that he shared with the world during the Bishop Eddie Long scandals. The announcement of Lemon’s memoir comes on the heels of a scathing New York Times review of personal memoirs as writing pity parties written by people who have not done anything special or worth writing about.

“Lost Boy”~ A Memoir of Child Abuse & Polygomy

BOOK REVIEW

There were a lot of great things about this book. First, Jeffs’ story pulls you in from the beginning and the book is VERY hard to put down. His accounts of what life was like in the FLDS church were fascinating to read about, and even though I had already read these same types of stories from two other perspectives, both perspectives were female so it was very interesting to hear about his life as a child from a male’s point of view.
