Christine Ackerman said she often finds it difficult to talk to people about the sexual abuse she endured as a child. But Ackerman, 31, said she had no trouble talking to Pilot, the horse she came to know in a program called EAST or Equine Assisted Survivors of Trauma.

The program is a partnership of the Bluegrass Rape Crisis Center and Central Kentucky Riding for Hope at the Kentucky Horse Park. Its creation stems from a desire to expand the riding program’s mental health programming at the Kentucky Horse Park and the rape crisis center’s commitment to offer cutting-edge healing opportunities to survivors of sexual violence. Tammy Lerner grew up in a big, close-knit family in central Pennsylvania. The accused abusers, that is.  READ MORE HERE

Abuse victim Andy Hudson bravely waived his legal right to anonymity to explain why he finally broke his silence

As Mark Standish faces the prospect of jail after being convicted of molesting a teenage boy during the sex abuse scandal that rocked Crookham Court School in Thatcham in the late 1980s, his victim Andy Hudson bravely waived his legal right to anonymity to tell Paul Cassell why he finally broke his silence.

He hid behind a sinister veil of depravity and deceit for more than 20 years. A teacher, a man respected and trusted by both pupils and parents, who even acted as the guardian for a number of boys entrusted in his care. But underneath this friendly facade Mark Standish, known more commonly as Alex, had a sick perversion for young teenage boys. READ MORE HERE

Happy: Kalanit Levy, pictured with her brothers, was born with Down Syndrome after a botched prenatal test failed to spot the condition. Her parents are now suing for the costs of her extra care
A couple who sued a hospital for not telling them their unborn child has Down’s syndrome has been awarded a $2.9million payout. Ariel and Deborah Levy, who say they would have had an abortion if they had known the child would be disabled, claimed they needed the money to pay for their daughter Kalanit’s lifelong care. And a jury agreed, deciding on Friday that Oregon’s Legacy Health hospital had been negligent in failing to diagnose the condition in a pre-natal scan. The hospital is considering appealing the verdict, but the Levys’ lawyer urged them to ‘let this case finally come to an end’.  READ MORE HERE

The Danger of Child Protective Services Growing Caseloads

Posted by Sandra On March - 11 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

Crystal Valdez awaits her next court date from a Cook County Jail cell. She’s 28 and accused of murder. Prosecutors say she watched as her boyfriend beat her young son to death. We wrote about this terrible case on Jan. 1. It makes you gasp. Caseworkers for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services knew something was wrong. Months before Crescencio “Christopher” Valdez died on his fourth birthday, an emergency room doctor had reported his suspicion that the little boy was being harmed. Police investigated, but DCFS made little effort to find out the results of the police investigation and quickly closed its own case. The DCFS investigator believed Crystal Valdez’s story about her son’s injuries. She said he fell off a porch. You might be tempted to say that this was a tragic error, but an isolated one. That would be dangerous.  READ MORE HERE
