BREAKING: New Baby Crib Law

Posted by Sandra On July - 4 - 2011 1 COMMENT

Graphic: New crib safety rules

All cribs now must pass tough new safety rules

As of Tuesday, law forbids selling older models — even used — that don’t meet stringent regulations

Starting Tuesday, it will be illegal in the U.S. to sell or even donate a crib that fails to meet the toughest crib safety rules in the world. Newly required safety tests are so stringent that few cribs in American homes — even those that have escaped recall after recall — are sturdy enough to pass them. As a result, federal regulators recommend that families that can afford to do so buy new cribs and destroy their old ones.

The increasing incidence of parental substance abuse, child abuse and neglect (often related to substance abuse), parental AIDS, incarceration divorce, and desertion have resulted in substantially higher rates of children being raised by grandparents.

With the start of a new law Friday requiring applicants for the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program to test for drugs, a new rule will also require that anyone who fails be reported to the state’s child abuse hotline. Reducing Child Abuse Potential

Posted by Sandra On June - 27 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Many children’s services are required to deliver evidence-based interventions, but for those working within the child protection system this is a difficult task. Whilst many interventions have proved successful at improving outcomes for families living in a number of different contexts, very little is known about the effectiveness of these programs when delivered to those involved with the child protection system, particularly when there is evidence or suspicion of child maltreatment.

Child Abuse

Recognizing and Preventing Child Abuse

Child abuse is more than bruises and broken bones. While physical abuse might be the most visible sign, other types of abuse, such as emotional abuse or child neglect, also leave deep, long lasting scars. Some signs of child abuse are subtler than others. However, by learning common types of abuse and what you can do, you can make a huge difference in a child’s life. Spanking: Abuse or Discipline?

Posted by Sandra On June - 21 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Is spanking a part of raising children or is it simply child abuse?

The hot-button issue of spanking recently returned to spotlight as a Texas mother, Rosalina Gonzales, was sentenced to five years of probation for spanking her two-year-old daughter. When the paternal grandmother noticed the child’s butt was red, she had the child taken to a hospital. They found Gonzales’ daughter healthy, with no lasting injury. Still, they notified the Department of Family and Protective Services who remanded custody of Gonzales’ three children to the grandmother.

Childhood Exposure to Trauma Ups Physical and Mental Risks

Childhood Exposure to Trauma Ups Physical, Mental Health Risks

A new research study suggests exposure to trauma can increase a child’s risk of developing learning and behavioral problems, and raise a child’s risk of obesity. Stanford University School of Medicine researchers said the findings could encourage physicians to consider diagnosing post-traumatic stress disorder rather than attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder, which has similar symptoms to PTSD but very different treatment. Investigators examined children living in a violent, low-income neighborhood and discovered an unexpectedly strong link between abuse, trauma and neglect and the children’s mental and physical health.

The findings could encourage physicians to consider diagnosing post-traumatic stress disorder rather than attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, which has similar symptoms to PTSD but very different treatment.
