20 Ways You Can Help Prevent Child Abuse

Unrealistic expectations of parenthood, differences between what we want and what we actually have, a strained relationship with our marriage partner, too much to do and too little time, financial problems, drug abuse, alcoholism, and a history of being abused as a child are examples of problems that can cause parents to take out anger and frustration on their children. Even very loving parents can lose control to the point of child abuse.

Investigators: Going Mobile Can Be Dangerous For Kids

Snow Camp, NC — After a 13-year-old North Carolina girl ran away with a man she met online, investigators warn that its easier for kids to keep their online lives secret, than parents might think. Thirteen-year-old Alexandria was reported missing on Monday. Investigators said she met 18-year-old Tyler Cole online. He drove to North Carolina from West Virginia, stole thousands of dollars from Cagle’s house, and the pair drove off.

In many situations, a child may be unable or unwilling to report their own abuse or neglect. Therefore, it is important that the network of adults in a child’s life are vigilant advocates, giving abused children a voice. A child may not report abuse because they cannot talk, do not understand what is happening, are afraid, or have no one to talk to. That is why there are mandated reporters, people and professions who have a legal requirement to report child abuse or neglect to the State. Many times, these people are in the best position to recognize signs of possible abuse…

Some studies estimate that just under 5% of adults may have feelings associated with peadophilia or act out on their impulses by sexually abusing children. That’s 5 adults in every 100 or 1 in every 20! Does your child have contact with 20 adults? Then you need to know about peadophilia! You need to know what peadophiles look like, what they do, what they say and how they act.

The Project

A human trafficking CAMPAIGN  STORY

The fight against injustice in different forms, as persecutions because of faith, gender, political believes such as refugees & human trafficking, has very much becomes my passion over the last few years. Catholic Charities of Newark in NJ, and USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops)in Washington, DC. gave me the opportunity  to research the Refugee/Human Trafficking patters around the world and also provide services to them throughout the United States.

The purpose of this Web site is to bring Government and NGOs in the United States and around the world together to collaborate with their own experiences in the efforts against human trafficking. This Web site has worldwide-specific information such as United Nations International Protocols, countries legislation and governmental projects to combat human trafficking. Bill: “Protect Our Children Act”

Posted by Sandra On July - 21 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Dubbed the “Protect our Children Act,” the bill, among other things, creates a new crime of aggravated murder of a child with a sentence of life without parole. It also expands the existing crime of aggravated abuse of a child to include anyone who recklessly causes physical injury to a child under the age of 14. The law currently only applies to day care providers. And in what seems a direct response to the Casey Anthony trial, the bill would also create new felonies for concealing the death of a child and failing to notify law enforcement when the whereabouts of a young child is unknown for more than 24 hours.

Two years ago, UNICEF’s Progress for children report, looked at data from 37 countries, and found that “86 per cent of children two to14 years old experience physical punishment and/or psychological aggression. Considering the huge variability in discipline is defined from country to country is it possible to design right policies, programmes and interventions that address child protection in the local context?

Pedophiles Can Be Anyone:

Pedophiles can be anyone — old or young, rich or poor, educated or uneducated, non-professional or professional, and of any race. However, pedophiles often demonstrate similar characteristics, but these are merely indicators and it should not be assumed that individuals with these characteristics are pedophiles. But knowledge of these characteristics coupled with questionable behavior can be used as an alert that someone may be a pedophile.

Child Sexual Abuse: Grooming

Posted by Sandra On July - 17 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS
Adult and child sitting on windowsill

The grooming sex offender works to separate the victim from peers, typically by engendering in the child a sense that they are special to the child and giving a kind of love to the child that the child needs. Different law enforcement officers and academics have proposed models of the “stages” of grooming. Since there are a variety of these models, it’s best to think of the grooming by sex offenders as a gradual, calculated process that ensnares children into a world in which they are ultimately a willing part of the sex abuse.

Hidden Epidemic Of Child Abuse

Posted by Sandra On July - 16 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

A hidden history of child abuse may lie behind the myriad social problems that afflict Australia, from its high rate of depression to its high rate of homelessness. We are more aware, partly thanks to the wayward Catholic clergy, of the existence of child abuse. But that has not translated into an understanding of its pervasive and long-lasting legacy. In a room of 100 women, 12 or 13 on average would have experienced sexual abuse as a child; in a room of 100 men, at least four or five would be survivors of sexual abuse. These figures come from the 2005 Australian Bureau of Statistics personal safety survey, and some in the field consider them conservative.

Recognize the Signs of Abuse

The Casey Anthony story grabbed headlines around the world.  It tore at people’s emotions, and brought up the topic of child abuse once again. Though there are hundreds of thousands of cases of child abuse, most don’t make the headlines. The children simply suffer in silence. Child abuse is much more than bruises and broken bones. No caring person would want to let a child suffer, yet many people are either scared to interfere, aren’t sure what to do, or they don’t recognize the signs of child abuse.

Molested Children With PTSD

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of child and caregiver participation in the cognitive-behavioral treatment of sexually abused children with posttraumatic stress symptoms. Method: Thirty-six sexually abused children (aged 5-17 years) were randomly assigned to a child-alone cognitive-behavioral treatment condition, a family cognitive-behavioral treatment condition, or a waiting-list control condition. Results: Compared with controls, children who received treatment exhibited significant improvements in posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and self-reports of fear and anxiety. Significant improvements also occurred in relation to parent-completed measures and clinician ratings of global functioning. In general, parental involvement did not improve the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy. Maintenance of improvement was evident at a 12-week follow-up assessment. Conclusions: Cognitive-behavioral treatment was useful, but further research is required on caregiver involvement. J. Am. Acad. Child Adolese. Psychiatry, 2000, 39(11):1347-1355. Key Words: children, sexual abuse, posttraumatic stress disorder, treatment, randomized trial.
