Bullying suspected as reason for Cooperstown girl’s suicide

Early Thursday, a couple hours before the sun rose in Cooperstown, N.D., 16-year-old Cassidy Joy Andel posted a note on her Facebook page: “My time has come, and so I’m gone. To a better place, far beyond. I love you all as you can see. But it’s better now, because I’m free.” She then hung herself in her home, apparently unable to cope with the nasty things being said about her through text messaging and the very social media network used to announce her own suicide. The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Thursday morning approved a motion by the defense to stay the trial of Brian David Mitchell, the man accused of kidnapping Elizabeth Smart in 2002, and is now considering whether to move it out of Utah. Mitchell’s defense attorneys told reporters they have left the courthouse and are disappointed the 10th circuit waited so long to halt the trial. Brian David Mitchell had not left the courthouse as of 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

UPDATE: The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has given the lawyers in the Brian David Mitchell case until midnight to file papers on whether the trial should be moved out of Utah. The appeals court judges asked the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Utah and Mitchell’s lawyers to file briefs that “inform the court whether a jury has in fact been empaneled; and (2) if a jury has been empaneled, what each party’s position is on whether the petition for mandamus is moot.” A ruling from the 10th Circuit could come as early as Friday.

Officials believe the baby’s father may have intentionally crashed the vehicle into the home–Killing newborn daughter and the mother

LOS ANGELES ( KTLA) — A 21-year old father has been booked on suspicion of murder after slamming his truck into a home, killing his ex-girlfriend and their newborn daughter. Authorities say 21-year-old Eduardo Villareal was treated for minor injuries Monday and was booked after being released from a hospital. The crash was reported just before midnight in the 400 block of N. Mott Street. Investigators say about 14 people were inside the home at the time of the incident, possibly for a Halloween get-together. A white Cadillac Escalade pickup, driven by Villarreal, slammed into the house, landing in the mother’s bedroom, officials said.

Elizabeth Smart Trial Begins

Posted by Sandra On November - 1 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

SALT LAKE CITY | Eight years after he’s accused of slicing through a kitchen window screen with a knife and whisking away a young girl in the middle of the night, the man charged in the abduction of Elizabeth Smart is headed to trial in federal court.  Jury selection in the trial of Brian David Mitchell is scheduled to begin Monday in Salt Lake City’s U.S. District Court. After years of delays driven by questions about Mitchell’s mental health and a jump from state to federal court, the trial of the one-time itinerant street preacher should finally bring Smart’s saga to a close. Hers is a tale of loss, a family’s fears and an improbable recovery that has long riveted the nation.

Dad Shook, Threw, Squeezed, Killed Infant

Posted by Sandra On October - 30 - 2010 1 COMMENT

A Lafayette father arrested Thursday on suspicion of causing the injuries that killed his 10-week-old son told authorities that he squeezed, threw and shook the infant “pretty good and pretty hard” in an attempt to revive him when he stopped breathing.  But investigators suspect Joaquin Campos, 21, abused his son, Lyon Campos, before he became unresponsive, according to an arrest report made public Friday.

A doctor told investigators that Campos has “given no explanation for why Lyon would stop breathing,” according to the report. The doctor from Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center said Campos “is giving a backwards story and that the shaking preceded the stop in breathing.”

San Diego Diocese Abuse

San Diego Diocese Sex Abuse Case: Lawyers Release 10,000 Unsealed Documents

SAN DIEGO — Attorneys for nearly 150 people who claim sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests made nearly 10,000 pages of previously sealed internal church documents public Sunday, revealing at least one previously unknown decades-old case in which a priest under police investigation was allowed to leave the U.S. after the Diocese of San Diego intervened.

After a three-year legal battle over the Diocese of San Diego’s internal records, a retired San Diego Superior Court judge ruled late Friday that they could be made public. The records are from the personnel files of 48 priests who were either credibly accused or convicted of sexual abuse or were named in a civil lawsuit.

The 144 plaintiffs settled with the diocese in 2007 for nearly $200 million, but the agreement stipulated that an independent judge would review the priests’ sealed personnel records and determine what could be made public.

Shane E. Kiser

DOVER — Two men were arrested for plotting to have sex with a fictitious 9-year-old boy by negotiating with a person they believed to be the child’s father in an Internet chat room, officials said. The Internet contact was an undercover officer. Shane E. Kiser, 29, of Millsboro — a nurse at Beebe Medical Center — was arrested at a Dover hotel, and a 41-year-old Maryland man was arrested outside a restaurant near Christiana Mall. Both were charged with first-degree attempted rape. Kiser also was charged with solicitation.

“Predators can and do contact our kids online,” Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden said in announcing the arrests at a news conference in the Dover offices of the Delaware Child Predator Task Force.

Father Raped 5 Daughters

Posted by Sandra On October - 21 - 2010 1 COMMENT

PATERSON (New Jersey) – A MAN whose apocalyptic visions allegedly led him to rape his five daughters and terrorise his family for years was found guilty on Wednesday of sexually assaulting a daughter who testified that she bore him a child. The jury deliberated for less than three hours over two days before finding the man guilty on all of the eight counts in the first of five separate trials – one for each daughter he is accused of victimising. The man showed no reaction to the verdict, other than keeping his eyes closed for extended periods while several of the counts were read.

Woman Sexually Assaulted Baby

Woman guilty of sex attack on baby

The conviction of a woman for sexually assaulting a baby and allowing her boyfriend to take photographs of the abuse has brought an end to “one of the most sickening paedophile rings this country has seen”, prosecutors have said. Tracy Dawber, 44, was the fourth woman to be convicted of abuse and pornography offences relating to “evil” paedophile Colin Blanchard’s internet child abuse ring. Dawber, a community care worker, wept as a jury at Winchester Crown Court took just two hours to find her guilty of the assault, and of allowing Blanchard to take pictures of the abuse on his mobile phone. She let IT consultant Blanchard, 40, take photos at her home in Southport, Merseyside, in August 2008 as she assaulted the baby on her sofa. The pair then took photos of themselves on the same phone taking part in sex acts.

JonBenet Case Still Unsolved

JonBenet Ramsey was killed in December 1996.

Police Have New Questions for JonBenet Ramsey’s Brother

JonBenet Ramsey was killed nearly 14 years ago.

Police in Boulder, Colorado, want to talk to the older brother of JonBenet Ramsey, the 6-year-old girl slain at home on Christmas night 14 years ago, the Ramsey family’s attorney said. Supporters of the family call it harassment. The brother, Burke Ramsey, has no interest in once again answering questions he has answered for many investigators many times, said the attorney, Lin Wood, of Atlanta, Georgia. And yet the mere hint of activity in one of the nation’s most famous cold cases has headlines swirling.

So, what’s the story this time? Burke Ramsey was the 9-year-old brother of JonBenet who, by all accounts, slept soundly in his room that Christmas in 1996 while his sister’s skull was fractured and she was strangled elsewhere in the house.
