(CNN) — Thursday’s massacre of 11 students at a Brazilian school could have been even worse, were it not for the heroic actions of a military policeman, according to a statement from the Rio de Janeiro state governor’s office. Third Sgt. Marcio Alexandre Alves, 38, and a colleague raced to the Municipal School Tasso da Silveira in Realengo after they were approached by a student two blocks away from the school, who asked them for help, the governor’s office said.

(MEMPHIS, TN) — Memphis Police Officer Mutima Winters is due in court Monday to face a charge of Aggravated Child Abuse. Officer Winters, who is assigned to the Old Allen Station, has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation. She’s been on the force since December, 2008. She is currently out on bond.

Florida–An 18-year-old Port Richie man has been arrested and charged with 1st-degree aggravated child abuse of a 8-month-old girl. Richard M. Amabile first told doctors and police that the infant accidentally fell off of a table and hit her head. After confronted with inconsistencies in his story, he broke down and admitted to shaking and throwing the baby when she wouldn’t stop crying.

Bobby Collins Jr., 25, has been charged with two county of serious bodily injury to a child.Houston police said Collins was was watching his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son March 3. The boy was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital and doctors said he had two swollen black eyes, two fractures in his right arm and a hemorrhage in his head that required a blood transfusion. EAST LANSING, Mich. — A 26-year-old East Lansing man has been charged with homicide in the death of his six-month-old son.Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III says Tuesday in a release that Yumar Burks also is charged with first-degree child abuse. Antonio Burks died Friday.

NEW YORK — The parents of a murder victim are suing Facebook after a paramedic pleaded guilty to photographing their daughter’s corpse and posting the image to the social networking site, according to court documents. Caroline Wimmer, 26, was found by her parents, Ronald and Martha, after she was strangled with a hair-dryer cord in March 2009 in Staten Island, New York.

Upstate NY soldier charged in 4-month-old girl’s slaying–Couple was trying to adopt baby

WATERTOWN, N.Y. — A Fort Drum soldier who was wounded during a 2009 tour in Afghanistan was charged Friday with killing a four-month-old baby he and his wife were trying to adopt. Jeffrey Sliker, 23, was arraigned Friday in Watertown City Court in northern New York on a second-degree murder charge in the death of Laurne Clark, who was also known as Mollie Sliker. The child was found dead at Sliker’s home Wednesday after his wife alerted authorities. An autopsy determined she died of a blunt-force head injury, and Sliker was arrested.

SAN BERNARDINO — A 35-year old man has been arrested for murder and torture after allegedly killing his 16-year old son and wounding five other family members. ROEBUCK, SC –A couple from Spartanburg County was arrested on drug charges just hours after their young child was found dead. A magistrate denied the couple bond at a hearing Friday afternoon. Master Deputy Tony Ivey of the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office said that 34-year-old Chuck McCullough and 21-year-old Carrisa McCullough, of Roebuck, were arrested and charged with one count each of trafficking meth on Thursday.

A Kansas City man judged guilty Wednesday of sex crimes against children kept meticulous records of his assaults and wrote handbooks on how to drug and molest girls. James Phillip Edwards, 61, videotaped his assaults on 13 girls over a four-year period and documented his research on drugging them in a document entitled “How to Molest Young Girls,” which investigators found on his computer.
