A group of rough and tough motorcyclists showed their softer side on Saturday in a fundraising event to help victims of child abuse. Bikers Against Child Abuse held its annual Bash and Poker Run at the West 60 Cycle, between Neosho and Seneca. It was a daylong event that began at 10 a.m. and lasted until after dark.
BACA is a worldwide organization of motorcyclists who seek to offer encouragement and support to children who have been abused. It was the local West Central Chapter of BACA, of around 16 members, which put on Saturday’s event.
Free trainings this August are expected to crest the “tipping point” milestone of five-percent of the entire lowcountry population, or 24,000 trained adults. The prevention programs include video instruction and interactive workbook tools that enable adults to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to the reality of the sexual abuse of children. The training is open to the public.
A sexual abuse prevention and response training program will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon July 31 at YWCA Lincoln.
Conducted by facilitators from Lincoln’s Child Advocacy Center, “Stewards of Children” teaches adults how to prevent, recognize and react to child abuse.
Workshop facilitator Jinaki Flint explains that more than 85 percent of child sexual abuse comes at the hands of someone the child knows—not a stranger.
A sexual predator may be close by. “People who abuse look and act just like anyone else,” said Paula Sellars, narrator of Stewards of Children, a video component for the Darkness to Light Workshop, presented June 28 by Georgia Center for Child Advocacy at the DeKalb County Crime Prevention Tour at Charles Drew Charter School in East Lake.
Safe Girls Strong Girls is committed to breaking the silence of childhood sexual abuse and giving girls their voices back. Through, our one of a kind camp: Camp CADI we are doing this. We are transforming lives and giving girls their childhoods back.
Internet crimes against children will be the subject of SOS’ first Child Abuse Prevention Summit scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 15 in the Flint Hills Technical College.
Sgt. Chet Pinkston of the Wichita Missing and Exploited Children Unit and the Emporia Area Multi-Disciplinary Team will be the presenters for the summit.
Pinkson, with 20 years of law-enforcement experience, also is a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. He will provide an overview of both organizations, as well as internet safety and social media.
Chase Community Giving is back to give away another $5 million
and you help decide which 200 local charities receive donations.
It’s a new Way Forward for giving.
Last year, Lanham-Lee, along with these coordinators, organized a memorial ride in Katelynn’s name. On June 19, the second annual Katelynn Stinnett National Memorial Ride will take place.
It is truly a national ride. Last year, riders in 43 states participated all in hopes of raising awareness of child abuse and funds for prevention efforts. Last year’s ride raised more than $150,000 for charities involved in child abuse prevention, $4,000 of it in Lexington, where Katelynn lived.
As you can see, the Katelynn Stinnett National Memorial Ride has already made a difference. It is a noble and certainly much needed effort to raise awareness of a senseless tragedy, a tragedy too often overshadowed by many other conflicts and disasters.
