Children’s Charities report uptick in donations due to Facebook cartoon character ‘campaign’

If you changed your avatar on Facebook last week to that of a cartoon character in support of “anti-child violence”, you can tell all the haters to suck it, because some actual charities actually benefited from the “social media awareness campaign.” It still stands to reason that not one child has been or stands to not be abused by tiny squares bearing the image of Spongebob, but at least some people got off their asses and did something in response to the campaign. (Although it’s possible it was in response to the backlash, and being told via Facebook that their profile pics are really not impactful one way or the other regarding whether kids are abused.)

Man’s 7,500-Mile Child Abuse Awareness Campaign

Man’s 7,500-mile cross-country journey raises child-abuse awareness

A couple of individuals have crossed the United States on foot,  even before the movie “Forrest Gump,” to raise money and awareness for various causes. But how many have accomplished the feat three times? That is the goal of Louis Michael Figueroa. The 42-year-old has crossed America two and a half times in his life. “When I ran in 1982, I was a 16-year-old kid without gray hair,” Figueroa said as he ran his hand through his short hair, flecked with gray, as he sat for an interview in the lobby of the Lompoc Holiday Inn. Running straight across the country, the young Figueroa set a record, crossing the continent in 60 days, doing it to help inspire a boy fighting bone cancer.

Paso Robles Digital Film Festival: “State & Fate of Children”

Posted by Sandra On November - 24 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Dreamcatchers for Abused Children was honored to attend the Paso Robles Digital Film Festival (State & Fate of the Children) November 19–23, 2010. We would like to publicly thank MR. BENFORD STANDLEY for inviting us to attend and promote child abuse awareness.

An important part of the PDFF (Paso Robles Digital Film Festival) is our Salute To Children and Youth. Mr. Standley wanted to shed light on the darkness that children suffer in, and honor the film makers that expose their plights. He screened some new and past documentaries that showed the suffrage of children and youth. He singled out, and honored some of the great journalists and producers, that cover these concerns on film, tv, and the Internet, and met some of the directors of these child abuse organizations, and created a forum with the film makers.

Festival Producer, Benford Standley, is deeply dedicated to shedding light in the darkness of the millions of homeless, runaway and missing children, the abused, the autistic, and those falling between the cracks in our society, and sadly, in historic numbers, here in the United States of America…

Films on the State and Fate of Children and Youth

The Screening of documentaries about some of the terrible fates that falls upon millions of children, is a very important element of this Film Festival.  We wanted to do more last festival, but this is the launch of an annual subject area of the Festival, at least until no children have to run to the streets, live homeless, come near the dark specter of suicide, wander and wonder in their states of autism, suffer the direct abuse of the abusers, murders, pedophiles, or mad heartless persons that would cause them harm…we will have this a part of the festival until the millions that are in the foster homes, jails, detention centers, state hospitals, and locked in backwards are being cared for the Paso Digital Festival will be dedicated to helping the film makers that venture into the dark stories showing The State and Fate of Children and Youth in the USA and the World.

We also pay tribute to the film makers that dare to bleed their heart’s out in the process of making a film about something that is so sad and heartbreaking, and conditions so dark, that as a film maker, one must have a calling or passion to cover subjects so dark.  However, so important, because it is these filmmakers that will help educate the culture, the government, or anyone that can help, if only they knew.

SNAP protesting outside the Vatican

Those representing the survivors still call for more action and admission of failings from the Church

For the first time since the clerical child sex abuse scandal emerged the Pope has summoned the world’s cardinals to the Vatican. Pope Benedict XVI has called 203 cardinals, including Ireland’s Sean Brady, to the summit which will take place next week. Victims of pedophile abuse are skeptical of the latest move. They claim that most of the cardinals have poor histories when it comes to dealing with abuse cases.

CEOP notes increase in the number of explicit self-taken images by children and young people

The number of reports about inappropriate content on the web has risen, says the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP). According to CEOP figures there were more than 6,000 reports of child abuse in the last year, that’s 880 up on the previous year. A quarter of these related to grooming incidents and another quarter concerned the possession and distribution of sexually explicit images of children. Furthermore, eight percent involved sexual abuse and 135 related to a suspect making arrangements to meet a child in the real world.

Community Crusaders~Changing the World

Sandra Dawn Potter is the CEO and Founder of Dreamcatchers for Abused Children, an official child abuse and neglect awareness organization, educating the public on the signs, symptoms, statistics, prevention and recovery of child abuse.

Sandra came from a small town and her family provided care for her young daughter. She felt comfortable knowing her child would be safe, as she struggled working the night shift. Their lives were permanently changed when Sandra walked-in and caught her stepfather molesting her daughter.

Sandra felt every emotion possible and wanted this man to pay for his actions. He confessed to molesting her daughter for three years. He was prosecuted and sentenced to 15 years in jail, but to a mother who’s daughter’s innocence was stolen, it wasn’t enough.

This man’s wrongful actions cost Sandra everything, but she refused to compromise her daughter or remain silent. It was then Sandra knew she needed to help children- those without a voice. Determined to help children without a voice, Sandra took a stand and became that voice, creating Dreamcatchers for Abused Children.

Last year, Dreamcatchers for Abused Children reached out to over 75,000 men, women and children.

Each spend eight to twelve hours a day, volunteering their time by answering letters, taking phone calls, providing education through books & BlogTalk Radio shows and helping victims seeking recovery, all in hopes of educating just one more person. For each person educated, there is a great possibility that another child will not have to suffer, as Sandra and her family had.

Adopt a Child (or) Family for Christmas

How to Adopt a Child (or) Family for Christmas

This Christmas, when you are putting up your tree, buying gifts and wrapping them, making fancy feasts and spending time with family, remember those who are not so fortunate. Many people are struggling to make ends meet for their day-to-day lives, let alone adding Christmas to the mix. If you are fortunate to have all you need and so much more, why not help those who do not have it so good? Adopting a family is rewarding for you and will make the recipient happy.

Instructions

How to Adopt a Family for Christmas

  1. Contact a local social service agency in your area such as the United Way, Catholic Charities, The Salvation Army or other local organization specific to your area, to connect with a family in need that you can help. If you have trouble finding an agency, contact your county government who can refer you to agencies in your community or see the Resources section below. Volunteer Match and many other sites have numerous opportunities to help the community, including adopting a family.
  2. Relay your budget to the organization’s representative who can then help you decide the size family that you should provide for, based on the amount of money you have. If your budget is limited you may want to help a single mom and her one child. If you have more money to work with, you may want to brighten Christmas for a mom, dad and their multiple children.
  3. Ask questions about the family you choose to make sure you get them what they want and what they can use. Ask their sex, sizes, ages, ethnicity (if you plan on buying dolls) and see if you can find out specific items they’d like to receive.
  4. Obtain coupons and go shopping. Try to get as much as you can with the amount of money you have. Places like Wal-Mart and Target are great places to go since you can usually get things very inexpensively.
  5. Arrange a convenient time to drop off the gifts and mingle with the family you are providing for. If you are uncomfortable, drop them off to the organization that you are working with and let them pass the gifts along.

Last month, we were so inspired by three volunteers from Pedal for Prevention (www.pedalforprevention.com). These young men biked through Colorado and more importantly through Fort Collins. They are riding their bikes across the country from South Carolina to California to raise money to end child sexual abuse. They will ride 4,300 miles in approximately 85 days to raise awareness and funds that help support programs like the Stewards of Children adult training and Talking About Touching student training that the Larimer County Child Advocacy Center provides in our community.

Dreamcatcher Founder Nominated for “Rare Life” Award

Posted by Sandra On October - 2 - 2010 1 COMMENT

Sandra Dawn Potter Nominated for Rare Life Award

Author, CEO and Founder of Dreamcatchers for Abused Children Sandra Dawn Potter has been nominated for the Rare Life Award 2011.

The Rare Life Award is sponsored by Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey, who has won its share of honors and awards, and now is honoring those who share a passion for excellence with The Rare Life Award.

Some nominees are heroic, show courage, leadership, dedication, devotion, character, survival skills and inspire others to make a difference. Some nominees make an impact globally and others in their own little corner of the world, but all nominees have one thing in common. They lead rare lives.

Potter was nominated by Donna Kshir. Kshir wrote, “My best friend Sandra Dawn Potter is a true hero. She took one of the most horrific and traumatic situations of her life and turned it into something positive.

“I met Sandra three years ago. She was different than any other person I have ever met. For such a small framed woman, she had this will, drive and determination powerful enough to move mountains.

“Sandra and I had several similarities and we immediately connected on many levels, but with all the similarities I was about to learn a difference between us that would forever change my life.

“I will never forget the day Sandra confided in me that she took a stand against child abuse after her daughter’s innocence was stolen. Sandra came from a small town and her family provided care for her daughter. She felt comfortable knowing her child would be safe, as she struggled working the night shift.

“Their lives were permanently changed when Sandra walked-in and caught her stepfather molesting her daughter.

“On the way to the police station Sandra’s young daughter asked why she was crying. Sandra responded, Mommy’s just sad right now. It was then her baby girl placed her tiny hands on Sandra’s face and said, Mom, don’t cry, it’s okay…we were just playing our secret game. It was then Sandra’s heart sank! She wanted to die.

It was then Sandra questioned herself. She was no longer one of those parents who thought this type of thing would “never happen to me.”

“Sandra felt every emotion possible and wanted this man to pay for his actions. He confessed to molesting her daughter for three years. He was prosecuted and sentenced to 15 years in jail, but to a mother whose daughter’s innocence was stolen, it wasn’t enough.

“Sandra is convinced if she had known then, what she knows now, she would have seen the signs and she would have known something was wrong. She would have been able to stop the abuse, before it progressed.

“This man’s wrongful actions cost Sandra everything, but she refused to compromise her daughter or remain silent. It was then Sandra knew she needed to help children- those without a voice. Determined to help children without a voice, Sandra took a stand and became that voice, creating Dreamcatchers for Abused Children.

“Dreamcatchers promotes child abuse awareness by educating the public on the signs, symptoms, statistics, prevention and recovery.

“Sandra spends twelve hours a day answering letters, taking phone calls and helping victims seeking recovery, all in hopes of educating just one more person. She believes for each person educated, there is a great possibility that another child will not have to suffer.

“No, Sandra is not a fire fighter or a police woman, and she has never gone to war, but she fights a battle everyday called child abuse, and more importantly, she is saving lives.

“I am proud and blessed to call Sandra a friend. I am truly inspired by her dedication.”

Award winners will receive a reception in their honor and a $10,000 donation will be made to the charity of their choice.

Voting is currently held online at: http://www.eaglerarelife.com . The process is quite simple, click on Potter’s name or photograph, go to the bottom of the page and click “Vote Now.” Voting begins today and is held until January 10, 2010. Participants can vote one time per day for their favorite nominee.
