LANCASTER, Calif. — A woman convicted of murdering her 18-month-old daughter and dumping her body near a freeway has been sentenced to 25-years to life in prison. Stacey Barker, 26, was convicted May 25 of one count of first degree murder, assault on a child and child abuse.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – A father whose negligence resulted in his 3 1/2-year-old daughter’s death from malnutrition and dehydration received the maximum sentence Wednesday in federal court in Las Cruces. Air Force Sgt. Derek Wulf has agreed not to appeal the verdict – a three-year prison sentence followed by a year of probation – during which he is not allowed to possess weapons and must complete mental health treatment.

A youth soccer coach being held in the Will County Jail on charges of sexually abusing a 12-year-old boy is now facing additional charges of possessing child pornography. Darrell J. Stephenson, 24, of Crest Hill was charged Thursday with three counts of aggravated possession of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. Stephenson was a youth soccer coach in Frankfort, Plainfield and Joliet.

FOREST GROVE — A 61-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after witnesses told police that a man was abusing a young girl at Rogers Park. The suspect was a friend of the young girl’s family, according to Capt. Aaron R. Ashbaugh. Serafin V. Bernabe, 61, of Forest Grove was arrested for first-degree sexual abuse.

TUCSON–A man wanted in connection with a child sexual assault case was shot and killed in a confrontation with Tucson police downtown Wednesday afternoon. The shooting happened outside the man’s apartment in the 400 block of South Stone Avenue near Kennedy Street. Detectives went to the man’s apartment to arrest him on charges of sexual assault of a child and child abuse, said Sgt. Diana Lopez, a Tucson police spokesman. The case, which involves an 8-year-old female victim, had been investigated for several months.

SANFORD — A jury Wednesday night convicted an Altamonte Springs man of neglecting two children he adopted while his wife withheld food from them and spanked them so hard and so often that she left them with scars. Dwayne Hardy, 50, faces a minimum of two years in prison. He is to be sentenced Aug. 1. The prime abuser, according to the children who testified Tuesday, was his wife, Pamela Hardy, 47. She is charged with a more serious crime: aggravated child abuse. She is to be tried later.

ST. CLOUD – A 30-year-old St. Cloud woman pled guilty today (Thursday) to abusing two of her children. Maimuna Mohamud pled guilty in Stearns County Court to the felony charges of Malicious Punishment Of a Child. Last September a police officer found her then two-year-old twins tied-up at the wrists and ankles.

A father and mother accused of making internet pornography involving their young son and daughter will reappear in Gosford Local Court next month. The two children, aged 11 and 12, and two younger siblings are in the care of the Community Services Department. The father, 50, of Erina, is charged with 40 offences, including using a child under 14 years to make child-abuse material and procuring a child under 14 years for unlawful sexual activity. The mother, 30, is charged with 16 offences, including aggravated sexual intercourse with a person aged more than 10 years.

ALBANY, N.Y.— New York lawmakers have voted to add directors of children’s overnight or summer day camps to the list of those required to report suspected child abuse or maltreatment to the state and to local social services officials. Sponsors say under current regulations camp directors are required to report incidents at their camps, but they can face civil liability for contacting authorities on behalf of a child concerning abuse or maltreatment elsewhere.
ST. PETERSBURG — A 37-year-old mother was arrested Wednesday night in downtown St. Petersburg after a series of events that police say started out with her drinking with three children in tow – and ended with her offering to have sex in a public park with two men. Christine Marie King, of 9230 Fifth St. N. – who also goes by Christine Corbitt – was charged with drunken driving, disorderly conduct, three counts of child abuse and battery on a law enforcement officer, according to Pinellas County Jail records.

A father allegedly killed his baby daughter with a cinder block just hours after she was born – because he and the little girl’s mother couldn’t afford to have another child. Christopher Fitzpatrick, 20, allegedly told his girlfriend, Jennifer Barrise, ‘I just want to get rid of it’ as she started having contractions while they were out shopping near their home in Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania. Both have now been charged with criminal homicide after police found their daughter’s tiny body buried in woodland near Fitzpatrick’s workplace.
