SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Just two weeks after Penn State was rocked by a child sex-abuse scandal, ESPN reported Thursday that police were investigating an assistant basketball coach at Syracuse University on allegations of child molestation. Shortly afterward, Syracuse placed longtime assistant coach Bernie Fine on administrative leave “in light of the new allegations and the Syracuse City Police investigation,” the school said.

Riverside police shot and killed a suspected child molester after he pulled a gun on detectives who were at his apartment to serve a search warrant Wednesday morning, police said. The shooting occurred about 7:20 a.m. in the 10400 block of Indiana Avenue, just south of the 91 Freeway. Shortly after detectives from the department’s sexual assault and child abuse unit knocked on the suspect’s apartment door to search the home, the man allegedly pulled a gun.

California—- A Sacramento music teacher was arrested for receiving and possessing child pornography.  Robert Broadfoot, 29, is a California State University graduate who has been giving private lessons to children inside their homes. He was a “Liberace Scholar” at Sacramento State, and has a Masters Degree in Music Performance at CSUS.

A teacher at Schaumburg Christian School was charged with sexual exploitation of a child Tuesday after a student told administrators he masturbated while students were in his classroom, police said. On Friday, Paul LaDuke, 75, of Hanover Park, was seated behind his podium when he unzipped and lowered his pants and masturbated, Schaumburg police said.

A fifth-grader in Illinois is dead and her family says bullies are to blame. The 10-year-old girl committed suicide after asking her mom if she could be homeschooled. “I really thought she had it all under control because I thought she was listening to me,” said Stacy Conner, Ashlynn’s mother. Stacy has talked to her daughter about bullying before but she never expected that her daughter, Ashlynn, an honor roll student at Ridgefarm Elementary, would take her life at just 10 years old.

A McKinley Park neighborhood man became so enraged that his son soiled his diaper that he placed a frying pan filled with hot cooking oil onto his genital area and thigh earlier this month on the Northwest Side, prosecutors and police said. The 23-month-old suffered second and third-degree burns to his genitals and thigh. His mother was also charged for allegedly failing to seek medical care for the child for more than three days, authorities said.

HESPERIA • Authorities arrested a mother and a Hesperia man for the torture and abuse of at least one of the woman’s children, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials said Friday. Desiree Perez, 30, and Daniel Knutte, 23, both of Hesperia, were arrested Thursday for abuse of a child, torture and kidnapping.

CANADA–MONCTON, N.B. — A Moncton man was sentenced to five years in prison Monday for owning what is being called the largest collection of child sex-abuse images ever discovered by Canadian police. Douglas Hugh Stewart, 52, was sentenced by Moncton provincial court Judge Anne Dugas-Horsman, after earlier pleading guilty to possessing, accessing and distributing child pornography.

Cleveland, OH— A Cleveland man was arrested and charged with endangering a child after his infant son had to be taken to the hospital and put on life support. A baby wipe was found shoved down his throat. Joshua Rains, 25, told police that the wipe disappeared after he wiped his son’s mouth. He claimed in trying to pull the wipe free, it would only go deeper inside the baby’s throat.

OHIO–A 13-year-old boy has been arrested for the rape of a 5-year-old girl at a McDonald’s Playland in southern Ohio, police said Friday. The assault allegedly occurred on October 29 in Anderson Township, near Cincinnati. The 5-year-old old was visiting the restaurant with her grandmother and playing in the Playland area at the time of the alleged attack.

Fresno police have arrested a 20-year-old man and charged him with murdering a toddler Sunday in a horrific case of child abuse. The man, Xavier Christopher Hawkins, was the live-in boyfriend of the boy’s mother, police said. Hawkins also goes by the last name Weeks. He was arrested Thursday and booked in Fresno County Jail on charges of murder, child abuse causing great bodily harm and penetration with a foreign object.

AKRON, OH– An Ohio man has been charged with beating his daughter because she couldn’t do her alphabet homework. Christopher D. Curry, 39, of Akron, Ohio, allegedly beat his 5-year-old daughter for having trouble identifying the letter D on Tuesday. Akron police said Curry picked up the girl by the neck and struck her in the head repeatedly.
