Father on trial ‘for starving and beating daughter, 3, to death after months of abuse because she was incontinent
A father has gone on trial for allegedly beating and starving his three-year-old daughter to death – three years after her bruised, malnourished body was found at his home. Donald Lee Cockrell, 30, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Alexis Marie Pounder with his fiancee, Michelle Nicole Smith, in Sandy, Oregon in January 2010. Smith pleaded guilty to the killing last year and faces a minimum of 30 years behind bars, and as part of the plea deal she will testify against Cockrell. How could you not define that as a person? That is a viable life.” Burnett covered the story of Heather Surovik, who was days away from giving birth to her son, Brady. She was returning from her final prenatal checkup when a drunk driver on his fifth DUI smashed into her car. Although Heather and her other family members survived, Brady did not. The standoff went through the night after the man, whose name has not been released by police, boarded the stopped school bus in the town of Midland City on Tuesday afternoon. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A New Mexico woman and her boyfriend locked up an 8-year-old girl with developmental disabilities in a wooden cage, then left her alone while they headed out to watch a movie, police said Tuesday. Cindy Patriarchias and Edmond Gonzales took her three children to an elementary school Friday to watch the movie, a police report said. SIOUX FALLS, SD -There have been several child abuse cases in the news recently.  And a child advocacy center in Sioux Falls is seeing more reported cases as well.  Dr. Nancy Free, the medical director at Child’s Voice, and Colleen Brazil, a forensic Interviewer, work hand-and-hand with victims of child abuse. They say child abuse cases are rising. “Every year our volumes increase by about 10 percent a year,” Free said.  “Some of that might be related to increase numbers in children being abused, but some of that is because of better reporting, better recognition.” READ MORE HERE

A mother has been arrested after she was allegedly filmed beating up a 12-year-old girl who had arranged to fight her daughter after school. Amber Lee Gutierrez, 33, surrendered to police after cell phone footage emerged showing her viciously attacking the young girl in a San Pedro, California alleyway on January 14. The video, first aired by local station KTLA, allegedly shows Gutierrez dragging the young girl along the ground before punching her across the back in an attack that left the child with a broken arm.
