A third trial of former Indiana state trooper accused of murdering his wife and children in 2000 got off the ground Monday after his two previous convictions have been overturned on appeal. Prosecutors and defense attorneys began questioning 150 prospective jurors in the trial of David Camm to determine whether Camm is guilty of shooting and killing Kimberly Camm, 35, his 7-year-old son Bradley and 5-year-old daughter Jill. Defense attorney Stacy Uliana said both sides began jury selection by weeding out people who had hardships that would prevent them from serving or who had already decided Camm’s guilt or innocence. SAVANNAH, GA — WTOC has learned new information about the arrest of a Guyton man on child molestation and exploitation charges. More charges could be on the way against 19-year-old Brandon Fanning. Homeland Security gave the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in Effingham County a tip about the Guyton man and potential connections to child porn and other materials originating in Effingham County. MANCHESTER, N.H. — A New Hampshire man used a handgun to shoot his 9-year-old son to death before taking his own life during supervised visitation at a YWCA office in the state’s largest city, officials said Sunday. An adult supervisor was present when Muni Savyon, 54, of Manchester, produced a handgun and shot 9-year-old Joshua Savyon of Amherst before shooting himself, the attorney general’s office said. CA teen found safe, suspected abductor killed in Idaho wilderness

Missing California teen Hannah Anderson has been found safe in Idaho, while her suspected abductor James Lee DiMaggio has been killed, San Diego County Sheriff’s officials say. San Diego Sheriff William D. Gore said San Diego sheriff’s authorities have notified the teen’s father that she was rescued. “He was very relieved and very excited and looking forward to being reunited with his daughter,” Gore said. “She appears well and was rescued and will be transported to a hospital in Idaho,” Gore said. SAN DIEGO — Authorities in San Diego on Friday positively identified the second body found in a burning home in Boulevard as that of 8-year-old Ethan Anderson. DNA harvested from the boy’s bone marrow was used to make the identification, authorities said. The boy’s body was found Sunday along with that of his mother, Christina Anderson. The positive identification was announced just hours after a possible sighting was reported of the boy’s sister Hannah and her alleged kidnapper James DiMaggio in Idaho. According to new government statistics in Hong Kong, the number of cases of sexual abuse against children last year had its biggest jump nine years of available public data. In 2012, 336 children were abused, and for the first half of this year, officials have already registered more than half that figure, or 183 cases. Why the increase? “One possible reason is the popularity of social networking websites on the internet where children are susceptible to sexual abuse pitfalls,” a government spokeswoman told the Wall Street Journal (paywall). A restraining order has been issued against the former Des Moines youth pastor who this week was accused of sexually abusing two teenage congregation members. Ryan Matthew McKelvey, 27, is barred from contacting all minors and is ordered to stay away form all places where minors typically can be found, according to court documents filed Wednesday. The restraining order also said McKelvey, who has a wife and young child, is allowed to see a specific minor, who was not named, only in the presence of the child’s mother. A 70-year-old music teacher accused of molesting a nine-year-old student allegedly offered to pay off the child’s mother, close the school and disappear, in exchange for her silence. Ilya Lehman, head of the elite music school in New York City, was allegedly caught in the act by the girl’s mother during a lesson in the family’s home. According to Manhattan Assistant District Attorney, Nahal Batmanghelidj, Lehman then had his lawyer call the victim’s mother offering to pay back money for the lessons, close his schools and vanish. ST. CLOUD — A six-year-old girl is recovering from severe burns after her mother and boyfriend admit to pouring boiling hot water on the girl, as a form of punishment. The mother worked at a daycare. Investigators said the incident happened at a St. Cloud home earlier this week. READ MORE HERE

Jeff Hittleman, the Assistant Broward County Public Defender was disturbed by the video: “It was shocking to see the amount of violence that occurred.  It was shocking.” Surveillance footage shot at  the Citrus Health System treatment center for mentally disturbed adolescents in Pembroke Pines, Florida shows a police officer grabbing at a 14-year old female patient causing her to swat at him, at which point the officer punches her, apparently with full force, in the face. As a single mom, you already have a ton on your plate, from helping your child with homework, to taking them to sporting events. Home safety might be low on your priority list, but with more than two million homes broken into each year in the U.S., according to an FBI report, creating a safety plan with your family should be added to your schedule. As a capable woman, there are a number of things you can do to outsmart the bad guys. The good news is, most of them are pretty basic.

Cut the Hedges

If there are trees, hedges, bushes or any other greenery blocking your windows, cut them back so your windows are clearly visible from the street. The idea is to give a criminal nowhere to hide if he’s lurking around your house or seeking entry.

Locks

Have a sturdy dead bolt lock installed on every exterior door. It’s an inexpensive way to block entry to your home. Remember to use the locks that are already in place on your windows and doors, even if you’re just leaving the house for a short time.

Extra Door Blocks

Something as simple as a cut-down broom handle lying in the track of a sliding door can make it almost impossible for a bad guy to slip in. The same is true of any sliding windows you have in your home. Another inexpensive fix is a metal door stopper positioned between the doorknob and floor of exterior doors. It simply sits on a rubber stopper on the floor and is wedged in under the doorknob. It is nearly impossible for anyone to get in when the apparatus is in place.

Dog

Even if you have the sweetest dog in the world, he’s not likely to want a stranger in your house. As long as your dog can bark, it is likely that criminals will be wary. While there is no reason to teach your dog to be aggressive, his natural tendency to protect his “people” may be enough to scare a thief away.

Double Protection

While a noisy dog may be enough to scare the bad guys away, consider a security system that does more. It can be tempting to buy a system that simply makes noise when someone comes in uninvited, but LifeShield security systems encourages consumers to consider doing more. Find out how much it would cost to install a system that will not only make noise, but also alert the authorities in the event of trouble. That way, you’re protected in more than one fashion. Teach teenagers how to operate the system so that they are safe when you’re away.

Lighting

Install exterior motion sensor lights. They don’t cost much more than standard long-burning light bulbs, but will illuminate the area when anyone gets near. That illumination may be all it takes to scare off a stranger.

Get to Know Your Neighbors

Because everyone is so busy, it has become the norm to remain isolated in a neighborhood, never getting to know your neighbors. Those very neighbors can be one of your greatest assets when it comes to home safety. Become friends, exchange phone numbers, and promise to keep an eye on each other’s property. One of the least expensive, most effective ways to fight crime is for neighbors to stick together and pay attention to what’s going on in their block, as the National Crime Prevention Council reports.

Take basic steps to make your home a safer place so that you can focus your energy where it’s needed most — on your family.
