Tips for Single Moms On Keeping Their Home Safe

Posted by Sandra On August - 8 - 2013 ADD COMMENTS

imagesAs a single mom, you already have a ton on your plate, from helping your child with homework, to taking them to sporting events. Home safety might be low on your priority list, but with more than two million homes broken into each year in the U.S., according to an FBI report, creating a safety plan with your family should be added to your schedule. As a capable woman, there are a number of things you can do to outsmart the bad guys. The good news is, most of them are pretty basic.

Cut the Hedges

If there are trees, hedges, bushes or any other greenery blocking your windows, cut them back so your windows are clearly visible from the street. The idea is to give a criminal nowhere to hide if he’s lurking around your house or seeking entry.

Locks

Have a sturdy dead bolt lock installed on every exterior door. It’s an inexpensive way to block entry to your home. Remember to use the locks that are already in place on your windows and doors, even if you’re just leaving the house for a short time.

Extra Door Blocks

Something as simple as a cut-down broom handle lying in the track of a sliding door can make it almost impossible for a bad guy to slip in. The same is true of any sliding windows you have in your home. Another inexpensive fix is a metal door stopper positioned between the doorknob and floor of exterior doors. It simply sits on a rubber stopper on the floor and is wedged in under the doorknob. It is nearly impossible for anyone to get in when the apparatus is in place.

Dog

Even if you have the sweetest dog in the world, he’s not likely to want a stranger in your house. As long as your dog can bark, it is likely that criminals will be wary. While there is no reason to teach your dog to be aggressive, his natural tendency to protect his “people” may be enough to scare a thief away.

Double Protection

While a noisy dog may be enough to scare the bad guys away, consider a security system that does more. It can be tempting to buy a system that simply makes noise when someone comes in uninvited, but LifeShield security systems encourages consumers to consider doing more. Find out how much it would cost to install a system that will not only make noise, but also alert the authorities in the event of trouble. That way, you’re protected in more than one fashion. Teach teenagers how to operate the system so that they are safe when you’re away.

Lighting

Install exterior motion sensor lights. They don’t cost much more than standard long-burning light bulbs, but will illuminate the area when anyone gets near. That illumination may be all it takes to scare off a stranger.

Get to Know Your Neighbors

Because everyone is so busy, it has become the norm to remain isolated in a neighborhood, never getting to know your neighbors. Those very neighbors can be one of your greatest assets when it comes to home safety. Become friends, exchange phone numbers, and promise to keep an eye on each other’s property. One of the least expensive, most effective ways to fight crime is for neighbors to stick together and pay attention to what’s going on in their block, as the National Crime Prevention Council reports.

Take basic steps to make your home a safer place so that you can focus your energy where it’s needed most — on your family.

MI Man Seeks Help In Protecting His 3-YO Son From Abuse

Posted by Sandra On August - 6 - 2013 ADD COMMENTS

67646_1404116573136809_1626407421_nA FACEBOOK PAGE for Masen was initially started to help get justice for my 3-year old son, Masen, whom was “injured” more than 8 weeks ago (6/1/13) while under the care of his mother’s fiance (she has since married this man). Masen’s “injury” consisted of broken blood-vessels all over the left side of his face, a blood-clot in his left eye and 3 finger-shaped bruises. I was not informed until 2 days after the “injury” occurred (and it wasn’t CPS that informed me, as apparently they have “30 days to inform the other parent”.) The “story” as to what happened (and when) has changed multiple times. CPS was brought in and although it has been determined be a classic open-handed slapping by an adult hand, CPS has not done anything as of yet to protect my son from the man who did this. He is still in the same household with all 3 of my children (ages 5, 3, and 16 months). Upon expressing my concern and questioning them about why nothing has been done to ensure my children’s safety when they’re at their mother’s, CPS has simply stated they are “still investigating” and in the meantime they will be “monitoring” things. This is the 2nd report my children’s mother has had filed with CPS in the last 12 months. The 1st report was filed last August when my children (whom were 4 yrs, 2 yrs, and 5 months at that time) were found sitting alone in a running vehicle in the parking lot at the local general store. The police report stated it was 89 degrees that day (windows were down, but A/C in vehicle didn’t work). A woman noticed the children unattended in the car and called 911. CPS was called in for this incident as well and their only action was providing the children’s mother with a pamphlet on the dangers of leaving small children in a vehicle alone. I was never even notified of this “incident”. These are 2 of many incidents of neglect (and, most recently, abuse). I have been trying to get custody of my children for the last 10 months without any success. It appears as though their mother’s pattern of poor decision-making, neglect and now abuse (from her new husband) is of no real concern to CPS. I am at a loss and am genuinely scared for the welfare of my children. My hope is that this page will help draw attention to this situation and force Emmett County CPS to step up and take the appropriate measures and precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of my young children, particularly Masen, who is now forced to spend time with the man (his new “stepfather”) who did this to him.

NOTE/UPDATE: Although we finally got this case into the probate court, we have recently been informed we cannot discuss the specific details of this case. All we can do is tell our story and say that we (and the children) are still in the same situation…continuing to lose faith in this whole system each day. As you will read in posts below, the “authorities” have now begun harassing and using intimidation tactics on me. They seem to be more focused on me and this Facebook page than the physical abuse that my 3 year old son suffered and the emotional abuse that my oldest son (5 years) is now having to deal with. All I want is to know my children are safe when they leave my home and that the man who did this will have to face repercussions for his actions. I do not want to see this swept under the rug. I won’t let that happen.
