MIDLAND CITY, Ala. — Police, SWAT teams and negotiators clustered at a rural property where a man was believed to be holed up in an underground shelter Wednesday after fatally shooting the driver of a school bus and fleeing with a 6-year-old child passenger, authorities said. The standoff went through the night after the man, whose name has not been released by police, boarded the stopped school bus in the town of Midland City on Tuesday afternoon. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A New Mexico woman and her boyfriend locked up an 8-year-old girl with developmental disabilities in a wooden cage, then left her alone while they headed out to watch a movie, police said Tuesday. Cindy Patriarchias and Edmond Gonzales took her three children to an elementary school Friday to watch the movie, a police report said. SIOUX FALLS, SD -There have been several child abuse cases in the news recently.  And a child advocacy center in Sioux Falls is seeing more reported cases as well.  Dr. Nancy Free, the medical director at Child’s Voice, and Colleen Brazil, a forensic Interviewer, work hand-and-hand with victims of child abuse. They say child abuse cases are rising. “Every year our volumes increase by about 10 percent a year,” Free said.  “Some of that might be related to increase numbers in children being abused, but some of that is because of better reporting, better recognition.” READ MORE HERE

A mother has been arrested after she was allegedly filmed beating up a 12-year-old girl who had arranged to fight her daughter after school. Amber Lee Gutierrez, 33, surrendered to police after cell phone footage emerged showing her viciously attacking the young girl in a San Pedro, California alleyway on January 14. The video, first aired by local station KTLA, allegedly shows Gutierrez dragging the young girl along the ground before punching her across the back in an attack that left the child with a broken arm. The British baby allegedly battered to death by her nanny may have been abused for many weeks, it emerged yesterday. Tests on Rehma Sabir’s body showed up injuries that were still healing when she died in an American hospital on her first birthday. A London secondary school repeatedly ignored warnings that a music teacher was sexually abusing young female pupils, a court heard today. Convicted pedophile Michael Crombie, 75, was accused by a series of girls and their parents whilst working at Wanstead High School, yet head teachers refused to take action. 9-month-old girl is ‘beaten to death’ by her mother’s boyfriend

She was just doing her job… A pregnant Oklahoma paramedic, Joanna Hickerson, 30, was on duty one night when a man in the back of the ambulance, Paul Ronald Heatley, 58, assaulted her and continually kneed her in the abdomen, killing her baby. A toddler’s remains were found in an oven. Andrey Gadzhiev, 34, admitted to killing and dismembering his helpless one-and-a-half-year-old niece and roasting her remains in a hot oven. According to Daily Mail, Andrey Gadzhiev’s sister Elena Titova, 29, had left him caring for the toddler for fifteen minutes while she visited a neighbor. When she returned there was no sign of the child and her intoxicated brother could not explain what had happened to her. The bodies of two girls were found dumped on a street. Two girls, aged 6 and 12, were found on a residential street in the capital, Guatemala City, apparently strangled and still in their pajamas. According to Daily Mail,  707 women were killed in Guatemala in 2012, a significant increase from 431 in 2011, according to the human rights group Mutual Support, which tracks violence in that nation. 3 Wounded in LONE STAR COLLEGE Shooting

HOUSTON — A shooting on a Texas community college campus wounded three people Tuesday and sent students fleeing for safety as officials placed the campus on lockdown, officials said. Harris County Sheriff’s Maj. Armando Tello said authorities had detained a person of interest.  Authorities also thought there could be a second shooter, according to a law enforcement official in Washington who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the ongoing case.
