200 Pardoned by Governor Barbour in his Last Days

Mississippi governor Republican Haley Barbour spent his final days in office granting pardons or early release to around 200 people – including more than two dozen convicted killers. The outraged families of the victims have slammed the decision as unfair but Mr Barbour has so far refused to comment. State records released on Tuesday show some of those given pardons or early release were rapists, murderers and child sex offenders.

HOUSTON, TX — Police have arrested two 10-year-old boys on suspicion of raping another child on a school bus. The boys are charged with aggravated sexual assault on a child which occurred in August. The arrests were only made last week after authorities watched security video taken on board the bus.  READ MORE HERE

National Human Trafficking Awareness Day

Today is national Human Trafficking Awareness Day, the annual calendar date meant to bring attention to the fact that human trafficking remains a serious problem both in the United States and abroad. According to Change.org, “Slavery is more affordable, more widespread and more entrenched in 2011 than it was in ancient Rome or the antebellum South of America. Modern-day slaves, also called human trafficking victims, can be male or female, from any country or representing any ethnicity.” In the United States, human trafficking victims are forced to work in the sex trade, as domestic servants, on farms and in factories.  READ MORE HERE

LIMA, Peru — Joran van der Sloot pleaded guilty Wednesday to all the charges against him in the 2010 killing of a Peruvian woman. “I am really sorry for what happened,” he told the three magistrates overseeing his trial in Lima, Peru, after pleading guilty to the “qualified murder” and simple robbery of Stephany Flores. There is no jury. The 24-year-old Dutch national faces a sentence of 30 years in prison, but his attorney hopes his guilty plea, called an “anticipated conclusion of the process,” will reduce that term.  READ MORE HERE

UPDATE: Van der Sloot Sentenced to 28-Years in Peru Murder

19-year-old Newporter DeAnthony Allen, was sentenced to 20 years in prison Wednesday morning for leaving his 3 1/2 month-old son blind and disabled following an incident in July 2010. The Providence Journal reports that Allen was the first to be sentenced under Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin’s newly-formed Child Abuse Unit. MURFREESBORO — Police have charged two residents with five counts of aggravated child abuse recently after they discovered five children living in “unsanitary living conditions” at an undisclosed home while assisting paramedics on an emergency call. Kirkland Mack Dunston, 29, and Makayla Latoshya Krantz, 21, have been charged in the case. Their relationship to the children and to each other is not known as that information is blacked out on the police report.  READ MORE HERE

Twitter’s child protection policies are lagging behind other social networking websites, a watchdog has warned. The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop) has urged Twitter to address its fears that some pedophiles use the site to discuss abuse and link to pornographic images. Twitter said safety was a high priority and it acted immediately on complaints of inappropriate behavior.  READ MORE HERE

A Doraville child photographer was arrested after police allegedly discovered  extensive videos and photos of children being sexually abused on his computer. Still, DeKalb County police aren’t sure if the 37-year-old man is responsible for producing any of the images. Mr. Benjamin Miller, who was in jail on $50,000 bond, had his first court appearance on Friday for sexual exploitation of children, the police spokeswoman Ms. Mekka Parish said.  READ MORE HERE
