JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The teenager who was the last person with a baby before her death has had his charges upgraded from aggravated child abuse to murder. Javarris Jawon Lane, 16, was arrested following the Sept. 25 incident at a home on West First Street.

A nine-month old girl who was brought to Mease Countryside Hospital in what authorities claim was a case of child abuse had died a little more than a day after she initially received medical attention. Aaliyah Siler, who was born this past January, was brought to the hospital yesterday morning for treatment for injuries of blunt force trauma when medical personnel determined the injuries were consistent with abuse.

The father of an infant who died under what police called suspicious circumstances last week has been charged with capital murder and felony child abuse, Covington police said today. Jared Meadows, 25, was arrested Tuesday evening and is being held without bond at the Alleghany Regional Jail.

LOS ANGELES– The Ventura County District Attorney’s office announced Wednesday that 17-year-old Brandon McInerney will be retried in the shooting death of his gay classmate. As of Saturday, child neglect is illegal in Maryland. Maryland was the only state in the country that did not have such a law, and earlier this year, the general assembly passed a bill making child neglect a misdemeanor punishable by up to five years in prison. The bill failed in Annapolis the previous three years.

A review of Utah homicides between January 2002 and December 2007 found an 83 percent conviction rate for suspects charged with adult homicides. Among suspects in child abuse homicide cases, researchers calculated a conviction rate of 88.2 percent. “Suspects of child abuse homicide are convicted at a rate similar to that of suspects of adult homicide and receive similar levels of felony conviction and severity of sentencing,” the authors wrote.

Another alleged child killer is off the streets tonight. Leo Ackley was arrested yesterday on murder and first degree child abuse charges for the death of 3-year-old Baylee Stenman. She was pronounced dead on August 1 at a Kalamazoo hospital. Ackley has been on the run since. Good thing his luck ran out. Maybe now little Baylee’s death can be avenged.
