EUROPE–The EU has taken a step towards common rules for cracking down on those who sexually abuse children and post images of the abuse on the internet. A committee of Euro MPs backed an EU draft directive calling for child abuse images to be removed at source. Where removal is impossible – for example, because web pages are hosted outside the EU – then the abuse images may be blocked by national authorities. MEPs aim to adopt the new rules later this year, after further negotiations.

Tokyo, Japan— She is a precocious little girl, in pigtails and rainbow rimmed glasses, all spark and determination. The 11- year-old attacks origami with the mission to build a flying bird. Creating an object of beauty contrasts with the ugliness this child has suffered at the hands of her own parents. The director of Nonohana-No-ie orphanage nods at us, signaling this girl is one of the of abused children who reside at this protective facility. Seventy percent of the children here, between the ages of 2 and 18, are victims of abuse and neglect so severe the police removed them from their parents’ custody.

Protect Kids From Molestation

Posted by Sandra On February - 12 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Moms unite!

Child abuse in its various forms affects every community. In the past 10 days, we’ve watched the unfolding story of a one-time Wynola resident who was convicted of molesting three young girls. This week, Oprah Winfrey ran the story of twin sisters molested by their father and brothers for years in their own home in Kansas.

How can you know when your children might be at risk—from a loved one, a stranger, a friend, or someone esteemed in the community because of the position held? How do you go about talking to your children? What do you do if you learn that questionable or illegal activity has occurred? And how do you help your children recover? … How do you recover yourself?

Iowa’s 51,960-name child abuse registry could get an overhaul in the wake of complaints that the list damages reputations and job prospects for the accused before they’ve had a fair hearing. “There are too many innocent people on that registry list,” said Rep. Bruce Hunter, D-Des Moines. “This isn’t about letting people guilty of child abuse off the hook. Those people shouldn’t be anywhere around children.”
