FORT SCOTT, KS— A southeastern Kansas man will serve at least 50 years in prison for the sexual abuse of a little boy. Douglas Page, of Fort Scott, was convicted in October of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and aiding and abetting indecent liberties with a child. Bourbon County District Judge Mark Ward sentenced Page to consecutive 25-year terms on those charges. Page received shorter sentences for child abuse and promoting obscenity to a minor.

San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a $4 million payout to settle a lawsuit brought against the city by the twin brother of a girl who was beaten and starved to death after San Francisco officials placed the children in foster care with their aunt. The surviving twin sued the city, Antioch School District and others in 2009 alleging failures in oversight that allowed him to be abused at the hands of his aunt.
The Philadelphia Archdiocese has placed three priests on leave and ordered the re-examination of cases involving more than 30 other priests amid allegations of child sex abuse detailed in a grand jury report. “Many people of faith and in the community at large think that the archdiocese does not understand the gravity of child sexual abuse,” Cardinal Justin Rigali of the Philadelphia Archdiocese said in a statement to reporters. “We do. The task before us now is to recognize where we have fallen short and to let our actions speak to our resolve.”

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A body found in the back of a pest control truck on the side of Interstate 95 is the daughter of the driver who was found unconscious outside the vehicle, according to a police report.Jorge Barahona, 53, of Miami, was charged with child abuse Wednesday. He remains hospitalized at Columbia Hospital and is scheduled to have his first court appearance on Thursday.

SACRAMENTO — A couple filed a lawsuit this week against a Sacramento hospital and a handful of employees after their 2-year old daughter lost part of all four of her limbs due to a bacterial infection. Malyia’s parents brought her to Methodist Hospital in November when she had a persistent fever, skin discoloration and weakness. Ryan Jeffers and Leah Vang watched as their little girl became sicker and sicker as they waited for 5 hours in the emergency room.

CHESTER, Pa. — A young mother is facing child endangerment charges after a photograph showing a child bound to a chair with duct tape was found in the internet. The photo shows child wearing only a diaper, its arms and legs affixed to the chair and its mouth covered by silver tape. 21-year-old Caira Ferguson admits she is the woman in the photo and that the child is hers, but denies posting the picture online. The image, given to WPVI-TV in Philadelphia, PA by the Chester Township Police Department, had a previously created credit to the website mediatakeout.com.

A man labelled the “German Fritzl” has admitted fathering seven of his stepdaughter’s children but denied repeatedly raping her and two of his other children over more than 20 years. The man, a 48-year-old known simply as Detlef S because of Germany‘s strict privacy laws, is standing trial at a court in Koblenz charged with 350 crimes of sexual abuse dating from autumn 1987 up to summer last year.

A Reno man has been arrested and charged with battering and strangling his girlfriend’s four-year-old child. On Feb. 11, Reno Police Department patrol officers were called to an area hospital for a four-year-old child that had injuries that were consistent with Child Abuse. Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit detectives also responded and determined that the child’s mother’s boyfriend, Clayton Whittaker, 21, had battered and strangled the child.

Mount Clemens, MI— Two 4-year-olds killed by their grandmothers — one drowned in a bathtub, another strangled. A 3-year-old boy stabbed to death in a brutal attack by his mother’s fiance. A 2-year-old girl sexually assaulted and murdered by her stepmother. Authorities allege the disturbing scenarios are reality in Macomb County and among at least 10 abusive crimes involving children ages 6 and younger in less than two years.
While overall cases of abuse and neglect in Macomb County aren’t going up, Prosecutor Eric Smith said the county is experiencing a spike in the severity of its child abuse cases and child deaths nearly tripled in 2010. The annual average of up to two child deaths per year jumped to five.
