A Maryland man has come forward with allegations that the Rev. Philip DeRea, an Aurora priest and chaplain for the Indy 500, sexually abused him over the course of eight years. The man, now in his early 40s, filed a lawsuit Thursday in federal court in Chicago that details the abuse, which occurred in the Washington, D.C. area in the 1980s. It also claims the priest acknowledged the molestation in emails last year and tried to give the man money in exchange for his silence.

Child abuse cases on rise: CPS: Number of referrals up more than 100 percent

It’s been almost a year since five siblings with special needs, all under 10 years old and victims of abuse and neglect, have been living in temporary foster care homes. Social workers with the Department of Public Health and Social Services have been trying to find a stable home for the children, but haven’t been successful. They’ve even tried to reunite the children with their birth mother, but determined the reunion may not be the best solution.

Moms Who Kill Their Children

Casey and Caylee Anthony: Personal Photos

It’s the headline du jour whenever a horrific case emerges of a mother killing her kids, as Lashanda Armstrong did when she piled her children into her minivan and drove straight into the frigid Hudson River. Our shock at such stories is, of course, understandable: They seem to go against everything we intuitively feel about the mother-child bond. But mothers kill their children in this country much more often than most people would realize by simply reading the headlines; by conservative estimates it happens every few days, at least 100 times a year.

A combination of undated handout photos shows Dawn Atwater and her three children, Brady, Isaac, and Ashley, who authorities say were killed by Alan Atwater who then fatally shot himself on Saturday, April 16, in Oak Harbor, Ohio.

OAK HARBOR, Ohio — A man who recently told a relative he was having marital problems called 911 and informed a dispatcher that he had fatally shot his wife and three young children and was getting ready to kill himself, too, authorities and his grandmother said Saturday. The 911 call came in just after midnight, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department said, and deputies arrived within minutes at the white-sided, two-story farmhouse in Oak Harbor, about 25 miles southeast of Toledo. They didn’t enter the home until two hours later, after they’d tried to contact the people inside by phone and through a loudspeaker.

When Discipline Goes Too Far

For most children, home is a safe haven. For abused children, home can be a place of danger.Growing up as a victim of abuse can cause profound psychological, behavioral and physical consequences. Severity depends on the conditions of abuse — age of the child, their developmental status at the time of the abuse, frequency of abuse and type: physical, sexual, emotional or neglect.
