It is almost a rhythmic pattern that every day, a school child is beaten by their teacher somewhere around Zimbabwe. Some are beaten so severely they have to seek medical attention.  Although no figures are yet available to substantiate the extent of this violence, media reports have shown that corporal punishment is still being meted out on pupils in violation of standing rules over the matter. Children are beaten with sticks, whips, rulers, boards and many other objects from pre-school right up to high school.

Child trafficking film premiere spotlights grave child rights abuse

NEW YORK – Not my Life, an independent documentary on child exploitation and abuse today premiered at New York’s Lincoln Centre. The film, which was filmed across five continents, looks at the devastating issues of child trafficking, sexual exploitation and child labour. Not My Life features Dr. Nicholas Alipui, UNICEF Director of Programmes, and Dr. Susan Bissell, UNICEF’s Chief Child Protection, who provide insight into the key issues.

“It is important to bring global awareness to these issues. Trafficking of children is a grave violation of their rights, robbing them of their childhood, their well-being, and the opportunity to reach their full potential,” said Dr. Susan Bissell. “Documentaries such as Not my Life are important, because they spotlight abuses that are otherwise often underreported.”

CALEDONIA, WI – An alleged sexual assault at Olympia Brown Elementary School that went unreported for several weeks may spur state law changes to child abuse reporting requirements. The changes could make more school personnel legally required to report noticeable or suspected child abuse, something that could help abuses be reported sooner instead of taking weeks like in the Olympia Brown case.

Posted by Sandra On January - 22 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

What You Can Do–Unrealistic expectations of parenthood, differences between what we want and what we actually have, a strained relationship with our marriage partner, too much to do and too little time, financial problems, drug abuse, alcoholism, and a history of being abused as a child are examples of problems that can cause parents to take out anger and frustration on their children. This fact sheet initiates new public service from Prevent Child Abuse America that has been made possible through a grant from the Sigma Delta Tau Sorority. Fact sheets will be issued periodically on a variety of subjects as needs arise. Fact sheets may be reproduced without notice to NCPCA; however, we request that the author, if any, and Prevent Child Abuse America be credited as the source if reproduced in part or in whole in other publications or products.

How much a society values its children can be measured by how well their children are treated. The fact that more than three children a day die from physical abuse or chronic neglect in the United States calls into question America’s commitment to its young, especially as many of these deaths are preventable. The fact sheet provides information on child maltreatment fatalities including: 1) national statistics regarding the scope of the problem, 2) the relationship between fatalities and child abuse reports, 3) the underlying causes of child abuse fatalities, and 4) strategies for child welfare agencies and others to prevent future deaths.
