Official statistics have not been gathered, but those prosecuting crimes in Davis County said 2010 revealed some interesting, even disturbing, crime patterns. Davis County Attorney Troy Rawlings said one area that has officials concerned is an increase in the physical abuse of children. “It’s not a significant increase, but still, there is a slight increase in child abuse, particularly physical abuse,” Rawlings said. His office is prosecuting three murder cases involving the deaths of children.

Man Accused Of Hitting Kid With Bat After Being Ding-Dong-Ditched

New Port Richey, FL – Calvin Kemp was arrested Saturday night for losing his cool and taking matters into his own hands after being repeatedly ding-dong-ditched by a couple of neighborhood kids. The kids apparently hit Kemp’s house several times that evening, and Kemp apparently got pissed. According to police, Kemp stood outside his house and waited for the kids to return. And the kids, obviously too stupid to know that you don’t hit the same damn house twice in one night, didn’t let him down.

Since February, the department has prevented access to 500 sites featuring images of child sex abuse for about 500,000 internet users. The ministry says it’s not known how many of these attempts were made by one person, or a group of people, or individuals.

South Florida has seen a rise in child-abuse cases and officials are calling for more awareness after a year in which the state’s social service agency has investigated some gruesome ones. In Broward County, cases rose to 15,748 in 2010, compared with 14,876 the year before, according to the state Department of Children & Families. In Palm Beach County, cases rose to 12,183 — up from 11,947 the previous year. “You’ll see a lot of domestic violence,” DCF spokesman Mark Riordan said. “That’s where the cycle is perpetuated. It’s a learned response.”

Baby’s starvation at shelter ruled homicide

A 2-month-old boy died of starvation and dehydration just before Christmas, police said, despite periodic visits from a social worker and while living in a West Philadelphia homeless shelter stocked with food. The boy, Quasir Alexander, had five siblings, including a twin brother, all now in foster care, sources close to the investigation said. Medics found Quasir when they were called to the Travelers Aid family shelter at 111 N. 49th St. about 6 a.m. Dec. 23, police said. It was not clear who called them. The baby, who appeared undernourished, was taken to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was pronounced dead, police said. An autopsy found he died of starvation and dehydration, and his death was ruled a homicide, said Lt. Raymond Evers, a police spokesman.

A PET python that strangled a two-year-old girl to death in Florida 18 months ago had not been fed in about a month. Newly released documents also revealed that Gypsy, the eight-foot-six-inch (260cm) albino Burmese python, had escaped its tank 10 times since its last meal. The snake killed Shaianna Hare in her crib on July 1, 2009. A review of investigative reports showed that the child’s mother and her boyfriend had kept the snake in violation of wildlife rules and apparently could not afford to feed it.
